For the love of Harem Pants

harem pants

harem pants

Harem pants are super trendy and modest but it has always been difficult for me to find the perfect pair with an ideal fit. A few weeks ago Mode Clothier sent me a package and lo and behold enclosed was the perfect pair of harem pants. The color was a light gray and the light color allows you to clearly see the beautiful drapes which is what makes harem pants so unique. Harem pants differ in where the drapes are located (some drapes are by the hips and some are by the ankles and some have both) and they also differ in how low the crotch of the pants fall. I never thought I would like a pair with such a low crotch but the drapes are perfection. The crotch in these pants actually fall till past my knees. When I wore these pants for the photo shoot, I pinned up the middle but as I was looking through the pictures I saw that it wasn’t properly depicted in the photoshoot pictures. I attached pictures on the bottom of the post to give you a better idea of the frontal view of the pants worn both ways- as is and with the middle pinned up.

I wore these same pants to an interview with Sweet Modesty earlier today and I did not pin up the middle. The interview should be up next week so you can see how I styled these same pants for a different look. Both times I wore them with heels for a more dressy style but they can easily be worn with ballet flats and a simple cotton top or even super casual with a graphic tee tucked in at the front (you don’t want to cover the tie sash because it would be too bulky if the shirt was not tucked in)

I realize it has been a month since my last post and I was totally missing blogging! I was very preoccupied due to the holiday and my laptop actually died. I attempted to get it fixed but to no avail. It was too expensive and so I decided to purchase another one. I hope you guys had a great holiday! My next post will be fitting for fall and will be titled: For the love of Pumpkin Picking and a very laid back casual outfit will be attached. You may have gotten a preview of it if you have been following me on my instagram account @sanahrashid. Hope you enjoyed this photo shoot. These pictures were taken by: @sameetaahmed. Follow him on instagram to see some of his work!

Harem pants: MODE clothier
**MODE clothier is offering my readers 10% off on purchases until November 1st- just enter the code: MODHIJABI at checkout. **

White washed silk button up top: GOSilk purchased on ruelala.com. I love GOSilk because they have very modest fitting tops.

Spiked heels: Vince Camuto ( I can’t seem to get enough of these heels, I wear them all the time and I have 3 pairs of them)

Silk scarf: simplyzeena. I love this scarf because I love animal prints and the added touch is the gorgeous chunky gold link print. It’s so lux. This was purchased at the ISNA convention which you can read about here

For the love of HijabFest

(This post should be properly titled: For the love of HijabFest and Getting Over My Fear Of Public Speaking but I decided due to the longevity I wouldn’t use that as my title. But that’s exactly what this post is)

Hijabfest

Hijabfest

New Brunswick Islamic Center (NBIC) hosted its first ever HijabFest in New Jersey this past Sunday. I was invited to give a small presentation on modest fashion. I agreed. I thought it would be more of a workshop on the side and I didn’t realize I would be on stage front and center. One of my greatest fears is public speaking. I despise it. I get nervous, start sweating, stammering, shaking etc. It’s not a pleasant sight to see and it’s quite embarrassing actually. Some people are scared of heights, bugs, spiders, whatever it may be and public speaking is it for me. Friends and classmates can attest to this fact and they all say it’s the strangest thing because it doesn’t fit my personality at all. For whatever reason, it is what it is. I decided not to cancel after realizing I would be front and center because I had already given my word. I debated taking drugs to calm my nerves but I don’t like taking prescription drugs unless it’s very necessary and so I decided against it. (OTC drugs are a different story. If you have a minor ache, pain or fever take a Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Or take two. You will feel great afterwards)

Upon arrival, Hijabfest was a sold out event (it sold out a few days before the event) and the entire area was buzzing. It was a smaller venue so it was pretty full to capacity. There was a great fashion show from some of the designers there. Each designer showcased 3 looks. I captured a few of them but it was hard to because I was running in and out because I had to make arrangements for my presentation. Some of the designers at the event included: Kotton Love, May Ade Designs, True Faith Apparel, Bulbul, Laila’s Collection, Unique Hijabs, and Amirah Couture. I especially loved the jilbabs from Bulbul, the scarves from kottonlove and I loved the variety and affordability of the hijabs at Al-Mujalbaba.

There was some enlightening speeches which were great everyday reminders. It was a well thought out, well organized event and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

My presentation was scheduled for 3:45 and at about 2:30 I met backstage with my models, one of them being my sister. I was going to present 4 outfits and 2 hijab tutorials. I got all the girls dressed in coordinating outfits and hijabs from my personal collection. Then it was showtime. I was shaking, my heart was beating through my chest and I couldn’t even stand. I took a seat behind stage while I was being introduced. My sister and all the models were so supportive and told me to relax and calm down and breathe slowly. That helped a bit. I wanted to turn around and run (just kidding?) but obviously I knew I couldn’t. So there was no turning back, indeed it was showtime.

Prior to HijabFest, I went over what I wanted to say a few times and I went over it with a friend the night before. I didn’t write anything out because that tends to make me more nervous. So I just winged it. No papers, no index cards, no cellphone and I just did it. I was nervous and my voice did stammer at times and when it was done I realized my presentation was 20 minutes long! It was so much easier than in school because this wasn’t a report and I wasn’t getting a grade on it. Also, I was doing something I take pleasure in so that must have made it easier. I was thoroughly impressed with myself. Alhamdulilah. I may have overcome one of my fears in doing something I enjoy. How wonderful! :)

I met some great girls from NYC and NJ. I added some backstage pics with my models and some pics during the presentation on my instagram account @sanahrashid. You can check that out here.

For the love of Vegas

me in Vegas

me in Vegas

For the love of Vegas. May I assume your initial reaction? A little hesitant. Maybe some confusion and maybe some agreement. Some of you are probably thinking what is a girl like me doing in a place like Vegas where alcohol, gambling and clubbing/partying is rampant especially since I don’t partake in any of those activities. And this can be one of the reasons why I haven’t been to Vegas before. But there is so much more to Vegas than what I listed above. There are tons of shows, kid friendly activities, shopping galore and amazing dining options! Whats not to love?!

me with a turban style hijab

Me with a turban style hijab. My face is very oily as per usual, my apologies. This was from dinner at AquaKnox

This past Memorial Day weekend my husband and I went to Las Vegas with my kids and my brother in law. We met up with a few friends who were staying for the weekend with their families as well. Saturday night was the first time I wore my hijab turban style inspired by the gorgeous Nura of @nuralailalov. I loved it. This turban style is so fun and different. Saturday night dinner was at AquaKnox which is in the Venetian where we were staying for our trip. I had the crab stuffed maine lobster. And that was easily the best lobster I’ve ever had. The dining options in Vegas are out of this world. So many fine dining options. NYC definitely still has the best restaurants, but Las Vegas has a lot of them as well like: Mesa Grill, Serendipity3, Sushi Samba, Tao, Nobu, Grand Lux just to name a few. After dinner, we went to catch a cirque du soleil show- Mystere.

(This is a very long post. I attached outfit of the day details to each day.)

Saturday Outfit of the day (OOTD) details:

Jersey hijab: hijab-ista

Black turtle neck shirt: h&m

Blazer: BCBGmaxazria also worn in my first ever post which you can check out here. I also wore this blazer to my mini Jersey getaway and you can read that post here.

Pants: Gap- true straight pants. These are just like my favorite black pants except in a different color. For detailed review check out my post here.

Printed neck scarf: White House Black Market

Spiked shoes: Vince Camuto and these heels are beyond comfortable. Purchased on sale at Last Call by Neiman Marcus for over 70% off. I now own 3 pairs of this shoe in 3 different colors. Ha!

Handbag: Chanel

On Sunday morning we got breakfast buffet at Caesars Palace and it was better than our previous mornings breakfast buffet from Wynn. Caesars Palace had slightly more halal food options. It seemed never ending. After that we went to Mandalay Bay because they had an aquarium. The kids enjoyed it so much. It’s not large but it has tons of sharks and a stingray petting section. The aquarium was set up beautifully with all the details and statues. It reminded me of the aquariums at Atlantis but much smaller scale. Below are pictures from the aquarium and my simple daytime no makeup look.

Sunday night was our second show and we watched Le Reve. It was amazing. Probably one of the best shows I’ve watched. It had less stunts but it had a story line and it was fully entertaining. I love these shows by cirque du soleil because I feel like they are a circus and broadway combined. In the evening I wore the same outfit, but I just put on makeup and I wore matching wrist cuff bracelets.

Sunday Outfit of the day (OOTD) details:

Silk shirt: Hale Bob purchased at ruelala.com for $40. I love this shirt. I love the rust orange color, the loose fit and the long length of the shirt. I wore it high low style by tucking it in, in the front. I often tuck shirts in if the pants have pleats in the front. It emphasizes the shape of the pant and allows you to see the front pleats. This top also comes with a neck tie and goldtone hardware closure.

Paisley printed pleated pants: Loft

Shoes: Boutique 9 purchased at Bloomingdale’s

Handbag: Rebecca Minkoff purchased at Bloomingdale’s

Matching wrist cuff bracelets: Arden B

Monday morning was checkout and that’s when we drove to the Grand Canyon. It was a long drive, about 4 hours each way but it was worth it. The Grand Canyon is breathtaking. I wish our trip wasn’t so short so we could have spent a longer time at the Grand Canyon but we had to leave to catch our midnight flight back to NYC. Attached are OOTD pics from the Grand Canyon.

For the love of Fashion Fighting Famine

just arrived at the show

just arrived at the show

This past weekend I attended the Fashion Fighting Famine fashion show in California. It was a completely last minute trip as I booked my trip a few days before I flew out. Fashion Fighting Famine is one of the primary fashion shows that brings Muslim designers from across the world. This years fashion show had designers from Australia, London, Dubai, Pakistan, Paris and America. About 1000 people attended and a portion of the proceeds went to charity. The charity was New Star Family Center which is based in California.

The fashion show was Sunday evening and it was held at the Hyatt hotel in Irvine California. There was such a buzz of excitement leading up to the fashion show which flowed perfectly. I have never been to a fashion show before but this is exactly how I would have imagined it to be. There was the red carpet, backdrops, detailing, photographers, videographers the bazaar with all the designers and decor etc.  I wish I had more pics from the runway show itself, but only cell phone pics were allowed and because of all the lights and the models’ fast paced walking, the pics unfortunately did not come out recognizable. If you go to the website: fashionfightingfamine.com, you can see some pics from the runway show. Everyone was dressed to impress. The guests as well as the bloggers, designers etc were decked out head to toe in fashion fabulousness. The bazaar was open before, during and after the show. Prior to the fashion show I went in to the bazaar and I met all of the designers.

The runway show showcased 9 designers: Abaya Addict, INAYAH, Hijab House, Madamme BK, Mohajababes, Needlez, Nisaa Boutique, RAYAN, SixteenR. These designers had clothing, hijabs, accessories and even swimwear. I loved the swimwear collection because the material was perfect and light for the water and there was so much variety. You could mix and match the pieces in case you wanted to wear tights or pants or show the neck or not etc. Perfectly fit for everyones’ personal style and taste. U.S. brand Zeena was also featured in the presentation. At the bazaar, I purchased 2 hijabs from Zeena and my sister did as well. I loved their prints on their hijabs and the different varieties they had. The bazaar included more designers besides for the 9 from the runway including Hijab-ista. (I have previously purchased hijabs and accessories from Hijabista and I was pleased with the prompt service and products)

with the musically talented Yuna Zarai

with the musically talented Yuna Zarai

During the runway show, the first designer was Nisaa boutique. This set the pedestal very high for the remaining designers and they did not disappoint. Nisaa boutique had gorgeous kaftans and it ended with a bridal kaftan. At the mid point of the fashion show, there was a live musical performance by Yuna Zarai. Her style can be described as alternative, pop and acoustic. She plays the guitar and ukulele and her voice is gentle and soft. She performed a handful of songs and her voice sounds just as wonderful live if not better! She is world known and has such talent. Check out her website here.

Included are pics from the fashion show of some of the amazing ladies I met and got to spend time with during my fun filled weekend.

She actually helped me with my eye makeup on Sunday for the fashion show. Such a helpful and sweet girl. Her tutorials are easy to follow and I love how her feisty personality shines right through her videos as well! She brought her daughter with her on her Cali trip and I respect and can relate to her so much. Great inspiration for fellow moms like yours truly. For the love of a Jersey Getaway

me at Revel

As a New Yorker, I am slightly hesitant on the title of this post but my mini Jersey getaway was so relaxing and enjoyable that this post was necessary (haha)! I met up with a bunch of fabulous girls this past weekend for our 2nd annual girls getaway (last year we went to Miami). No boys and no babies/kids. This large group of girls consists of housewives, doctors, dentists, social workers, teachers, mommies and everything in between. This was a mini getaway because it was actually just one night but our itinerary was fully packed with activities. We arrived at Revel for brunch followed by a relaxing afternoon at the Bask Spa. I have never been to a spa before so this was an enjoyable experience for me.

After feeling rejuvenated, all the girls got dressed up for our dinner reservations at Cuba Libre. The food at Cuba Libre did not disappoint. The appetizers were so diverse and were served family style. It consisted of bread and spiced mango butter, shrimps and scallops, yuca frita (kind of like french fries), frituras de malanga (similar to pakoras and these were my favorite), and plantain and malanga chips served with 3 different dips- black bean hummus, cuba libre salsa, and smoked marlin salad. These appetizers were delicious and seemed never ending! The staff was very accommodating to our large party of 20+ girls and gave us vegetarian selections and made sure everything was alcohol free. We also ordered fruity mocktails like mango mint mojito and pina coladas which were fresh and delish. Dinner was surprisingly outstanding. I ordered mahi mahi which melted in your mouth with flavor. I was upset I could not finish my meal but it’s probably because I could not stop eating those appetizers! Included is my outfit of the night (OOTN) and some pics of these fabulously fashionable girls.

Karaoke topped off the evening. We rented a room at the same hotel as Cuba Libre and when you put 20+ girls in one room, absolute silliness and singing passions emerged. We hung out, and enjoyed the hotel which is a lot more classy and sophisticated then some of the other atlantic city hotels.

For the love of Spikes

sans spikes edgy

sana spikes edgy

My obsession with spikes started a few seasons ago when Burberry introduced their trench coats with spike detailing. I was in love. Spikes have become more mainstream now and it can be worn both edgy and high fashion as well. When implementing spikes, its important to keep only one item with spikes. But you can add as much spiked jewelry as you prefer. You don’t want to overdo the spike look because that can come off as tacky. Jeffrey Campbell has affordable edgy shoes with spikes. Aldo, Steve Madden and Zara all have incorporated spikes in their shoes as well. If you want high fashion, nothing beats Christian Louboutins Spikes shoes. They come in many varieties from metal to metallic to colored spikes. Valentino has gorgeous spiked bags and shoes from their rockstud collection.Zara has spike detailing in their clothes as well. I bought this top from Zara and it has such a perfect modest fit. It comes in 2 styles and of course I bought them both. It’s slightly longer in length and has a loose fit. The sleeves can also be worn rolled up and buttoned in place. It’s casual and edgy. Perfectly worn with heels or flats. Asos, H&M and Forever 21 all sell clothes with spike detailing. If you are following me on Instagram@sanahrashid you probably noticed my spiky nails that I was sporting last week. So edgy and so much fun! In the fashion of loving all things spikes, it only makes sense for me to have spiky nails as well! Below is how I incorporated spikes with a top and a pair of shoes and came up with 2 different looks- one more casual/edgy and one more dressy. I have worn the Jeffrey Campbell spiketini shoes in a previous post, you can view my outfit of the day here. Also, I have worn spiked jewelry in one of my previous posts as well, which you can see here.
