For the love of the Blazer Cape

blazer cape

blazer cape

Capes are such a major trend right now. Capes usually come in outerwear like jackets, sweaters and blazers. I know this is my third post on a blazer but it just shows how much I love them. When you take a blazer and combine it with a cape, it easily becomes one of my most favorite pieces. Since it is a blazer, it can be worn casual with jeans or you can dress it up with slacks and heels. This long length makes it so versatile. It can be worn with a simple cotton shirt or even a button up shirt. The shirt underneath should not be the same color as the cape because then it just looks messy and you actually look like you have 4 arms. Ha.

blazer cape cobblestone

blazer cape cobblestone

This specific cape is inspired by a blazer because it has a notched collar, 2 button closure and front pockets. It can be worn closed but the beauty of this cape is that it should be worn open. This is extra long in length which is great for when you are wearing more fitted pants or when you tuck your shirt in like how I did.

The elegant way a cape falls exudes laid back effortless style.  This cape has shoulder pads like a proper blazer and at times I felt like it wasn’t fully sitting on my shoulders, but it just takes some getting used to. Some cape jackets are extra flowy and some are a little more straight. Being a blazer, this is a little more straight.

For the love of the Poncho Sweater

poncho

poncho

When you hear poncho, do you think of a rain cover that is sold at sporting events or theme parks during the rain? Or the woolen garment that is typically worn is South America that has a slit to slip your head through? These thoughts initially would come to my mind first but this poncho is so much more wearable than those. A poncho is a very loose top with or without sleeves that has a small opening at the neck. If you twirl in a circle, the top would resemble a flower from above because it’s so loose and flowy.

gold buttons on the sleeves

gold buttons on the sleeves

This particular poncho has sleeves and it is a turtleneck and that’s why this is ideal for fall. In addition it has gold buttons on the arms to add a little detail. I love that you can wear this poncho with jeans, or even front pleated casual pants.  It would look great with harem pants as well. A poncho is usually worn casual/ casual chic. I wore mine with heels because the heels worked well with the outfit. The one downside is that it’s very hard to wear a jacket with this because of the dolman like sleeves. A poncho can be worn with another poncho jacket, a very loose jacket with dolman sleeves or a capelike jacket.

poncho

poncho

I realize you have probably never seen a poncho worn with another shirt underneath but this poncho was simply too short for me to wear separately and be comfortable with it. So I wore this poncho with a longer cotton shirt underneath to keep the casual materials in sync. I also wore a crushed georgette hijab to complement the casual look. You always have to wear what you are comfortable with; it doesn’t always have to stick with the norms because at times you wont be comfortable with the norms.

For the love of the Boyfriend Jean

boyfriend jean

boyfriend jean

Boyfriend Jeans are loose and are cut parallel to men’s jeans. They are baggy around the hips/thighs and tend to taper slightly from the knees down. Often you can wear the jeans rolled up. With these jeans I unrolled the jeans so they fit me full length. Boyfriend jeans look great with sandals, flats, and super high heels/stilettos and pumps as well.

boyfriend jeans

boyfriend jean

Last weekend I bought my first pair of boyfriend jeans and I have lived in them the entire week so I knew I had to make a post on them. I purchased them from Gap and they were on sale for 40% off. A lot of boyfriend jeans have heavy rips in them and I steer clear of those. These don’t have any rips. I know H&M has boyfriend jeans that have rips but they are covered and so it doesn’t show skin. I want to buy those next!

bamboo in the back

bamboo in the back

This is a super laid back casual outfit. I’m wearing a high low top with it. To avoid looking exceptionally baggy, I tucked the shirt in at the front. Boyfriend jeans are great because they are so loose that I am able to wear my shorter shirts with them. To complete my super casual laidback look, I opted for no eyeliner and no lipstick; hope you were still able to recognize me! Ha. I wore a cotton headscarf to keep the material of each article of clothing consistent.

What is the best thing about boyfriend jeans?! No actual boyfriend is required. Ha. I felt this look was similar to looks from: ManRepeller.com. Below, I uploaded moving pictures. This is the first time I ever added them to my blog posts. What do you think of it? I feel like I’m awkwardly dancing in the second one.

For the love of Harem Pants

harem pants

harem pants

Harem pants are super trendy and modest but it has always been difficult for me to find the perfect pair with an ideal fit. A few weeks ago Mode Clothier sent me a package and lo and behold enclosed was the perfect pair of harem pants. The color was a light gray and the light color allows you to clearly see the beautiful drapes which is what makes harem pants so unique. Harem pants differ in where the drapes are located (some drapes are by the hips and some are by the ankles and some have both) and they also differ in how low the crotch of the pants fall. I never thought I would like a pair with such a low crotch but the drapes are perfection. The crotch in these pants actually fall till past my knees. When I wore these pants for the photo shoot, I pinned up the middle but as I was looking through the pictures I saw that it wasn’t properly depicted in the photoshoot pictures. I attached pictures on the bottom of the post to give you a better idea of the frontal view of the pants worn both ways- as is and with the middle pinned up.

harem pants sitting

harem pants sitting

I wore these same pants to an interview with Sweet Modesty earlier today and I did not pin up the middle. The interview should be up next week so you can see how I styled these same pants for a different look. Both times I wore them with heels for a more dressy style but they can easily be worn with ballet flats and a simple cotton top or even super casual with a graphic tee tucked in at the front (you don’t want to cover the tie sash because it would be too bulky if the shirt was not tucked in)

I realize it has been a month since my last post and I was totally missing blogging! I was very preoccupied due to the holiday and my laptop actually died. I attempted to get it fixed but to no avail. It was too expensive and so I decided to purchase another one. I hope you guys had a great holiday! My next post will be fitting for fall and will be titled: For the love of Pumpkin Picking and a very laid back casual outfit will be attached. You may have gotten a preview of it if you have been following me on my instagram account @sanahrashid. Hope you enjoyed this photo shoot. These pictures were taken by: @sameetaahmed. For the love of HijabFest

(This post should be properly titled: For the love of HijabFest and Getting Over My Fear Of Public Speaking but I decided due to the longevity I wouldn’t use that as my title. But that’s exactly what this post is)

Hijabfest

Hijabfest

New Brunswick Islamic Center (NBIC) hosted its first ever HijabFest in New Jersey this past Sunday. I was invited to give a small presentation on modest fashion. I agreed. I thought it would be more of a workshop on the side and I didn’t realize I would be on stage front and center. One of my greatest fears is public speaking. I despise it. I get nervous, start sweating, stammering, shaking etc. It’s not a pleasant sight to see and it’s quite embarrassing actually. Some people are scared of heights, bugs, spiders, whatever it may be and public speaking is it for me. Friends and classmates can attest to this fact and they all say it’s the strangest thing because it doesn’t fit my personality at all. For whatever reason, it is what it is. I decided not to cancel after realizing I would be front and center because I had already given my word. I debated taking drugs to calm my nerves but I don’t like taking prescription drugs unless it’s very necessary and so I decided against it. (OTC drugs are a different story. If you have a minor ache, pain or fever take a Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Or take two. You will feel great afterwards)

Upon arrival, Hijabfest was a sold out event (it sold out a few days before the event) and the entire area was buzzing. It was a smaller venue so it was pretty full to capacity. There was a great fashion show from some of the designers there. Each designer showcased 3 looks. I captured a few of them but it was hard to because I was running in and out because I had to make arrangements for my presentation. Some of the designers at the event included: Kotton Love, May Ade Designs, True Faith Apparel, Bulbul, Laila’s Collection, Unique Hijabs, and Amirah Couture. I especially loved the jilbabs from Bulbul, the scarves from kottonlove and I loved the variety and affordability of the hijabs at Al-Mujalbaba.

There was some enlightening speeches which were great everyday reminders. It was a well thought out, well organized event and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

My presentation was scheduled for 3:45 and at about 2:30 I met backstage with my models, one of them being my sister. I was going to present 4 outfits and 2 hijab tutorials. I got all the girls dressed in coordinating outfits and hijabs from my personal collection. Then it was showtime. I was shaking, my heart was beating through my chest and I couldn’t even stand. I took a seat behind stage while I was being introduced. My sister and all the models were so supportive and told me to relax and calm down and breathe slowly. That helped a bit. I wanted to turn around and run (just kidding?) but obviously I knew I couldn’t. So there was no turning back, indeed it was showtime.

Prior to HijabFest, I went over what I wanted to say a few times and I went over it with a friend the night before. I didn’t write anything out because that tends to make me more nervous. So I just winged it. No papers, no index cards, no cellphone and I just did it. I was nervous and my voice did stammer at times and when it was done I realized my presentation was 20 minutes long! It was so much easier than in school because this wasn’t a report and I wasn’t getting a grade on it. Also, I was doing something I take pleasure in so that must have made it easier. I was thoroughly impressed with myself. Alhamdulilah. I may have overcome one of my fears in doing something I enjoy. How wonderful! :)

I met some great girls from NYC and NJ. I added some backstage pics with my models and some pics during the presentation on my instagram account @sanahrashid. You can check that out here.

For the love of DC

I came to DC with some friends to attend the ISNA convention. ISNA stands for Islamic Society North America and the ISNA convention is a convention held annually which brings speakers from all across America to enlighten us with some great lectures and workshops. There is also a bazaar which has clothes, paintings, furniture, jewelry etc from all over. It’s great to hang out with friends from near and far because these conventions bring tons of people together from all over.

I finally got to meet some people I have been networking with. One of them is Farrah of go to Greater Lengths . She’s awesome and I love her blog! You can read all about it here. She did a great section on ISNA as well entitled Modest Marvel and highlighted girls who she thought were dressed fashionably and modest and it is definitely worth checking! I spent a good amount of time at the bazaar because of the great hijab shopping. I bought hijabs from KottonLove and Zeena. I also bought hijabs from Zeena when I went to Fashion Fighting Famine in California. I love their unique prints! I bought a headscarf with chains on it. I am loving chains as a print and wearing chunky chains as well. It’s definitely a trend this season.

For the love of the Trouser Pant

Martha's and I

Martha’s and I

One of my friends came back home for a short trip because her younger sister was getting married. After all the wedding festivities settled down, I caught up with her and a few friends. It was very last minute and we got some Chinese food followed by dessert at Martha’s Country Bakery. Fatimas Halal Kitchen is in Astoria and they have good Chinese food and it’s not expensive at all. It’s a laid back restaurant and we all enjoyed ourselves. I ordered my usual which is General Tsaos chicken and beef fried rice. I attached a picture of dinner.

After dinner we went to Martha’s Country Bakery which was very close by. They close at 11 pm and we got their right before closing. I ordered tres leches and it was good but maybe a tad bit too sweet. One of their more popular dessert is the very berry napoleon but im not a huge fan. It’s good but I just don’t find it amazing. But everyone I know is obsessed with it. Their frozen coffee drinks are my favorite but it was too late to order one because drinking coffee very late keeps me up.  Service was prompt and everyone was accommodating.

Hmm, what should I order?

I wore trouser pants in a bright coral/orange hue. I love these pants because they have a great fit and are very long. Trouser pants tend to be a little looser and are generally worn more dressy because of the wide leg opening. They are great pants to be worn to work and can be worn casually paired with flats and a tee shirt. I love the fit of this pant and I have it in a green shade as well. The length of these trouser pants required me to wear them with heels and I wore them with patent leather wedge sandals. I paired the pants with a silk top and I added a gold belt with Swarovski crystal detailing. I wore a silk rectangle hijab (head scarf) which matched the texture of the shirt and the color of the pants. Not pictured well, but my outfit was complemented with a purple Chanel handbag that has a brushed gold chain.

For the love of Vegas

me in Vegas

me in Vegas

For the love of Vegas. May I assume your initial reaction? A little hesitant. Maybe some confusion and maybe some agreement. Some of you are probably thinking what is a girl like me doing in a place like Vegas where alcohol, gambling and clubbing/partying is rampant especially since I don’t partake in any of those activities. And this can be one of the reasons why I haven’t been to Vegas before. But there is so much more to Vegas than what I listed above. There are tons of shows, kid friendly activities, shopping galore and amazing dining options! Whats not to love?!

me with a turban style hijab

Me with a turban style hijab. My face is very oily as per usual, my apologies. This was from dinner at AquaKnox

This past Memorial Day weekend my husband and I went to Las Vegas with my kids and my brother in law. We met up with a few friends who were staying for the weekend with their families as well. Saturday night was the first time I wore my hijab turban style inspired by the gorgeous Nura of @nuralailalov. I loved it. This turban style is so fun and different. Saturday night dinner was at AquaKnox which is in the Venetian where we were staying for our trip. I had the crab stuffed maine lobster. And that was easily the best lobster I’ve ever had. The dining options in Vegas are out of this world. So many fine dining options. NYC definitely still has the best restaurants, but Las Vegas has a lot of them as well like: Mesa Grill, Serendipity3, Sushi Samba, Tao, Nobu, Grand Lux just to name a few. After dinner, we went to catch a cirque du soleil show- Mystere.

(This is a very long post. I attached outfit of the day details to each day.)

On Sunday morning we got breakfast buffet at Caesars Palace and it was better than our previous mornings breakfast buffet from Wynn. Caesars Palace had slightly more halal food options. It seemed never ending. After that we went to Mandalay Bay because they had an aquarium. The kids enjoyed it so much. It’s not large but it has tons of sharks and a stingray petting section. The aquarium was set up beautifully with all the details and statues. It reminded me of the aquariums at Atlantis but much smaller scale. Sunday night was our second show and we watched Le Reve. It was amazing. Probably one of the best shows I’ve watched. It had less stunts but it had a story line and it was fully entertaining. I love these shows by cirque du soleil because I feel like they are a circus and broadway combined. In the evening I wore the same outfit, but I just put on makeup and I wore matching wrist cuff bracelets.

For the love of the Denim Jacket

denim jacket

I have not worn a denim jacket for years; the last time I wore one was probably junior high school, maybe even elementary school. I have been looking for the perfect denim jacket but I never found one I fully liked. There’s always too many contributing factors involved like fit, length and color and I could never find the perfect combination of all three. When I was at the mall a few weeks ago, the spiked detailing on this denim jacket caught my eye. Reluctantly, I tried it on and when I did, I could not put it down. I liked this jacket because it’s cropped and fitted. It also has a reverse high low style which looks great when worn open as well as closed. I like how it has a sleek shape without bulky buttons. The zipper closure and zipper on the sleeves add to the sleek fit. This light color denim is perfect for the spring and summer because it contrasts well with bright and bold colors. This denim jacket is a much more updated look than the classic denim jacket. Full outfit details in the middle of the post.

This denim jacket has spiked detailing on the shoulders and across the back which are shown in the pics above. Yes, I’m still obsessing over this spike trend! Read my post on spike loving here. I feel like denim jackets can get tricky because it should be properly paired with denim jeans of the same shade. A fashion no no is pairing it with dark denim jeans or vice versa. It looks too busy, messy and unkempt. This light color denim can go great with white pants/jeans and linen. You can also pair it with certain black pants as well. If you do not have jeans of the same shade, you can always wear it with dresses and skirts. Denim jackets look great with printed dresses, and printed skirts as well. The contrast of different prints like floral, graphic, stripes etc pair exceptionally well with denim. I will include a future OOTD with this jacket and a dress. Full outfit details for this post is attached a few pictures below.

For the love of The Bronx Zoo

Bronx zoo

Bronx zoo

Sunday is family fun day in my household and we always try to see family and friends and take the kids to fun activities if possible. Sunday started with a brunch hosted by one of my friends. Brunch was one dish style and people brought all sorts of various and delicious treats. I made a ginormous omelet and Aaisha of baking part time made delish chocolate chip Belgian waffles from scratch with homemade whipped cream and succulent strawberry toppings. You can check out her blog for yummy recipes.

colorful omelet

colorful omelet

After the immense eating fest, the best way to digest it all would be a great walk at the zoo and that’s exactly what we did! If you haven’t been to The Bronx zoo, you have to go. And if you think its small you are totally wrong. The Bronx zoo is huge and its actually impossible to see all of the exhibits in one day. We have a season pass and we go numerous times in the year. My kids are obsessed, they love it. When you are at the Bronx zoo, you would never realize you are actually in NYC, the tress, greenery and waterfalls totally throw you off. It’s so serene. You don’t need kids to enjoy it, it’s so scenic and natures beauty is truly captured here.

The kids love the tiger mountain and different exhibits like world of reptiles, congo (which has the gorillas and baboons) and Madagascar. They have a 4D theater and currently its displaying a short ice age movie. The kids usually love the 4D theater but the dinosaurs caused my youngest son to actually be a little scared. He didn’t sit through the entire movie. Their butterfly garden is one of my favorites because the butterflies are flying everywhere and its very hands on. There is a petting zoo for the kids as well and the kids can feed the goats, sheep etc. The Bronx Zoo also has the Bengali Express Monorail which is a relaxing monorail ride where you can see some of the larger animals like elephants. In the summer they have camel rides for the kids and face painting and all sorts of additional fun activities.

Here is my causal, laid back outfit of the day (OOTD) at The Bronx zoo.

Were you digging my graphic pants? I actually wore them in my first ever blog post. I definitely don’t shun from the fact that I repeat articles of clothing and outfits because it is necessary. In that post, I wore the same pants with a blazer and heels for a much more dressy look. Check it out here.

In my last post, about chunky watches I wanted to add a few words to it. While coming home from work last week, the cabs’ tv informed me that Michael Kors has a watch hunger stop campaign. With the purchase of their specific watch, they will donate to WFP- United Nations World Food Programme and that is enough for 100 meals! 1 watch= 1oo meals. That’s phenomenal, and I love when designers give back and make products where proceeds go to a great cause. The watch is $295 and comes in 4 different styles/sizes. The mid size is 38mm and the oversized is 45mm and it comes in both silver and gold. Fitting with my blog post, yes it is a chunky watch and that’s a win-win situation! Read my previous post on chunky watches here. I have included the link to purchase the watch here.
