For the love of the Boyfriend Jean

boyfriend jean

boyfriend jean

Boyfriend Jeans are loose and are cut parallel to men’s jeans. They are baggy around the hips/thighs and tend to taper slightly from the knees down. Often you can wear the jeans rolled up. With these jeans I unrolled the jeans so they fit me full length. Boyfriend jeans look great with sandals, flats, and super high heels/stilettos and pumps as well.

boyfriend jeans

Last weekend I bought my first pair of boyfriend jeans and I have lived in them the entire week so I knew I had to make a post on them. I purchased them from Gap and they were on sale for 40% off. A lot of boyfriend jeans have heavy rips in them and I steer clear of those. These don’t have any rips. I know H&M has boyfriend jeans that have rips but they are covered and so it doesn’t show skin. I want to buy those next!

bamboo in the back

This is a super laid back casual outfit. I’m wearing a high low top with it. To avoid looking exceptionally baggy, I tucked the shirt in at the front. Boyfriend jeans are great because they are so loose that I am able to wear my shorter shirts with them. To complete my super casual laidback look, I opted for no eyeliner and no lipstick; hope you were still able to recognize me! Ha. I wore a cotton headscarf to keep the material of each article of clothing consistent.

What is the best thing about boyfriend jeans?! No actual boyfriend is required. Ha. I felt this look was similar to looks from: ManRepeller.com. Below, I uploaded moving pictures. This is the first time I ever added them to my blog posts. What do you think of it? I feel like I’m awkwardly dancing in the second one.

For the love of the High Waisted Palazzo Pant

high waisted palazzo pants

high waisted palazzo pants

I bought my first pair of high waisted palazzo pants and they are so effortlessly chic and super modest. I have pants that are mid to almost high waist but this is the first pair of pants that I own that are truly high waisted and actually sit on your natural waist. I wore it with a simple cotton top which was too long. I shortened the top to more properly show the full shape of the high waist and the loose flow. The easiest way to shorten a top is by tying a knot on the side and that’s exactly what I did. It did make me reminiscent of the 80’s when girls wore loose tie dyed tops and tied a knot or used a small clip to make the knot. I believe when I wore it for this shoot, it didn’t look quite like the 80’s, or did it? ha.

lake

crossed legs lake

By tying the knot on the side, it created a ruched effect which is great at minimizing the waist and hiding a belly (my stomach has more so become my problem area after pregnancies and it’s OK with me). I also love the slight bell shape of the sleeves. This totally enhances and goes with the look of the pants and adds a great voluminous overall shape. I realize the shirt could have still been a couple of inches shorter but this was the length I was comfortable at wearing it.

Outfit of the day (OOTD) details:

High waisted palazzo pant: Rachel Zoe. Rachel Zoe is a celebrity stylist for the stars and I love her style. It’s super effortless, modest and classy. (I wasn’t such a huge fan when she was going through her whole boho stage) I am kind of in love with her. I met her at a book signing when I was in California last month. After I met her I knew I wanted to do a post on these pants as soon as possible. I was just waiting for the weather to get a little warmer even though I bought the pants about 2 months prior. These pants are 100% silk and that makes the fall of the pants perfection. Added benefit: these pants hardly wrinkle. At the end of the post, I am attaching the pic I have with Rachel Zoe in case you missed it when I uploaded it to my instagram account @sanahrashid.

Simple cotton top: Gap.

Studded platform pumps: Brian Atwood. Well, of course you must pair Rachel Zoe with Brian Atwood. Is this being obnoxious? Perhaps, but I would like to think I styled these pants well.

Fringe bib necklace: Kenneth Jay Lane purchased on sale at ruelala.com

I am not embarrassed to admit I had a total fan girl moment when I met Rachel Zoe. I get so much fashion inspiration from her. Here I am with Rachel Zoe and some of my awesome gal pals: Nura and Ibtihaj from our trip to California last month.

For the love of a Desert Safari

keeping warm with the fire

keeping warm by the fire

I just got back from a short trip to Dubai which was a pit stop on the way to Madinah and Makkah to perform Umrah. I traveled with my husband and 2 of our friends. We stayed in Dubai for 3 nights but it was a very short trip because we arrived Friday night and left Monday morning. In Dubai, our itinerary was jam packed with things to do because, well there’s so much to do! Dubai is such a new city. Everything is extra beautiful, extra over the top and extra lux. But my favorite parts of Dubai was the old city of Dubai- Dubai City of Gold also called the Gold Souq.

Dubai City of Gold

Dubai City of Gold

The old city of Dubai reminded me of Pakistan and the walled inner city by the Wazir Khan Mosque (I blogged about my trip to Pakistan and you can read all about it here) but a cleaner and safer version of it. It was 1 dirham (about 27 cents) to get there by boat and it was so enjoyable that we did it twice. The Gold Souq was a great place to buy souvenirs, clothes, and small odds and ends. Being a New Yorker, the feeling of safety you felt in Dubai was unparalleled; Dubai is one of the safest cities in the world.

The absolute highlight of my trip was the desert safari hands down. We booked it in advance through: beyondthedunes.com and it was a private tour. The rest of the tours are in groups. We thought it would be a great experience for just the 4 of us and the guide and it definitely was. We were picked up by Ahid himself. He was in charge of everything and he’s a one man show. The desert safari included everything. He does everything from picking us up, to sand dune bashing, sand boarding, to setting up the tents, and preparing the meals and setting up the fire.

ATVing- my first time

ATVing- my first time

Our first stop was the ATVing, then we did sand dune bashing with Ahid in control of driving and after that we did sand boarding. I posted a ridiculously funny video of me sand boarding and it is up on instagram. While sand dune bashing we saw Arabian Oryx which is a rarity. These animals were almost extinct and now there are only about 1100 living in the wild. We saw about 10 in the desert that day.

The dinner was perfection. There was spicy wings, chicken kebabs and lamp chops accompanied with humus and different sauces, salads, and bread. We devoured the whole meal which was so fresh and delicious.

all of use huddled by the fire

all of us huddled by the fire

It was slightly cold but being seated on the cushions by the fire, you could hardly feel the cold. I even took a nap under the stars in the night sky in the desert. It was so peaceful. If you are ever going to Dubai I can’t recommend this desert safari tour enough. Our entire trip was a hectic rush because we wanted to make ample use of our time and during the desert safari we were finally able to fully relax and enjoy the true beauty of Dubai and experience the desert as it should be enjoyed.

Khaki style pants in neon orange: Gap purchased on sale for $8

Jeweled velour hoodie: Express

Shoes: Crocs, perfect for the sand because the shoes are completely washable

(All pics were taken with my Iphone so it’s not the best of quality but we didn’t want to be burdened with an actual camera in the desert. Also, I wish I took more pics but we were enjoying ourselves and the serenity of the desert that even these few pics I had to remind myself or someone else to take it.)

Thanks so much for reading. I’m so embarrassed that I have not blogged in almost 2 months but work and life has taken over the last few months. I’ve been extremely busy and I’m so sorry for the lack of posts. Last month marked my one year blog anniversary! I don’t believe its been an entire year. I really wanted to do a post on my reflections of the past year but this trip and work consumed my life the last few weeks and I truly just did not have time. My apologies.

For the love of HijabFest

(This post should be properly titled: For the love of HijabFest and Getting Over My Fear Of Public Speaking but I decided due to the longevity I wouldn’t use that as my title. But that’s exactly what this post is)

Hijabfest

Hijabfest

New Brunswick Islamic Center (NBIC) hosted its first ever HijabFest in New Jersey this past Sunday. I was invited to give a small presentation on modest fashion. I agreed. I thought it would be more of a workshop on the side and I didn’t realize I would be on stage front and center. One of my greatest fears is public speaking. I despise it. I get nervous, start sweating, stammering, shaking etc. It’s not a pleasant sight to see and it’s quite embarrassing actually. Some people are scared of heights, bugs, spiders, whatever it may be and public speaking is it for me. Friends and classmates can attest to this fact and they all say it’s the strangest thing because it doesn’t fit my personality at all. For whatever reason, it is what it is. I decided not to cancel after realizing I would be front and center because I had already given my word. I debated taking drugs to calm my nerves but I don’t like taking prescription drugs unless it’s very necessary and so I decided against it. (OTC drugs are a different story. If you have a minor ache, pain or fever take a Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Or take two. You will feel great afterwards)

Upon arrival, Hijabfest was a sold out event (it sold out a few days before the event) and the entire area was buzzing. It was a smaller venue so it was pretty full to capacity. There was a great fashion show from some of the designers there. Each designer showcased 3 looks. I captured a few of them but it was hard to because I was running in and out because I had to make arrangements for my presentation. Some of the designers at the event included: Kotton Love, May Ade Designs, True Faith Apparel, Bulbul, Laila’s Collection, Unique Hijabs, and Amirah Couture. I especially loved the jilbabs from Bulbul, the scarves from kottonlove and I loved the variety and affordability of the hijabs at Al-Mujalbaba.

There was some enlightening speeches which were great everyday reminders. It was a well thought out, well organized event and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

My presentation was scheduled for 3:45 and at about 2:30 I met backstage with my models, one of them being my sister. I was going to present 4 outfits and 2 hijab tutorials. I got all the girls dressed in coordinating outfits and hijabs from my personal collection. Then it was showtime. I was shaking, my heart was beating through my chest and I couldn’t even stand. I took a seat behind stage while I was being introduced. My sister and all the models were so supportive and told me to relax and calm down and breathe slowly. That helped a bit. I wanted to turn around and run (just kidding?) but obviously I knew I couldn’t. So there was no turning back, indeed it was showtime.

Prior to HijabFest, I went over what I wanted to say a few times and I went over it with a friend the night before. I didn’t write anything out because that tends to make me more nervous. So I just winged it. No papers, no index cards, no cellphone and I just did it. I was nervous and my voice did stammer at times and when it was done I realized my presentation was 20 minutes long! It was so much easier than in school because this wasn’t a report and I wasn’t getting a grade on it. Also, I was doing something I take pleasure in so that must have made it easier. I was thoroughly impressed with myself. Alhamdulilah. I may have overcome one of my fears in doing something I enjoy. How wonderful! :)

I met some great girls from NYC and NJ. I added some backstage pics with my models and some pics during the presentation on my instagram account @sanahrashid. You can check that out here.

For the love of New York Fashion Week

#NYFW

#NYFW

Last week I attended my first ever fashion show during New York Fashion Week. The show had 4 designers and it was sponsored by FUSE and was held at Alvin Ailey studios. The designer I came for was Ashley Peciola- AP for Women. I love how the outfits were so unbelievably modest. It consisted of pieces I would easily wear like blazers, trousers pants, long sleeved tops, skirts and long dresses. One of my favorites was this emerald green jumpsuit. It had a deep cut down the back but can be easily accommodated by wearing a shirt under. It came with a detailed belt. It was such a standout piece (I do have a slight preference towards jumpsuits, especially long sleeved ones).

Leather pants: Helmut Lang. These are my first time wearing leather pants. It was an Eid gift to myself and I was so excited to finally be able to wear them! I love how it’s two colors dark teal in the front and black in the back. I love the front pleats and the sash in the front. It’s such supple leather. It can be paired perfectly with a simple cotton top and it would look great with booties as well.
Silk top: Jeunesse purchased on ruelala.com
Cotton hijab wrapped like a turban: kottonlove.com . This hijab is cotton and makes for the perfect turban because it gives slight volume and a great shape as compared to a jersey scarf which clings more to the head.
Flats with studs in black and rugged silver: Luxury Rebel

After the fashion show, my friend and I met up with Langston for a photo shoot. He is an extremely talented photographer from Detroit and he was in NYC working on an exciting project to be released next year. You can follow him on instagram @langstonhues

For the love of DC

I came to DC with some friends to attend the ISNA convention. ISNA stands for Islamic Society North America and the ISNA convention is a convention held annually which brings speakers from all across America to enlighten us with some great lectures and workshops. There is also a bazaar which has clothes, paintings, furniture, jewelry etc from all over. It’s great to hang out with friends from near and far because these conventions bring tons of people together from all over.

I finally got to meet some people I have been networking with. One of them is Farrah of go to Greater Lengths . She’s awesome and I love her blog! You can read all about it here. She did a great section on ISNA as well entitled Modest Marvel and highlighted girls who she thought were dressed fashionably and modest and it is definitely worth checking! I spent a good amount of time at the bazaar because of the great hijab shopping. I bought hijabs from KottonLove and Zeena. I also bought hijabs from Zeena when I went to Fashion Fighting Famine in California. I love their unique prints! I bought a headscarf with chains on it. I am loving chains as a print and wearing chunky chains as well. It’s definitely a trend this season.

We also did touristy stuff and went to the National monument, Reflection Pool and Lincoln’s Memorial.

For the love of Washington D.C. – Food Edition

I travelled to DC for Labor day weekend with friends and family. The post was getting so long that I had to split it up. Here is the food edition of my DC trip. It’s a detailed description of the restaurants I went to. (some of these restaurants are actually not in DC but 10-25 mins away)

Busboys and Poets: very trendy laidback “community gathering place”. The chicken is halal and the meat is kosher. There are tons of vegetarian options, dessert, drinks and coffee. A major added plus is it’s completely inexpensive. I had the chicken Panini and some of my friends had the steak and asparagus salad which was a mere $13. It had 3 pieces of steak, salad with asparagus, dressing and gorgonzola cheese. It was so fresh. The dessert was great as well. I had iced mocha (twice) and shared desserts with friends. I loved their cheesecake. Link here. I cant emphasize how much I loved this place, probably one of the reasons I came here 3 times during my stay!

RJ cafe: this restaurant is nothing fancy but the food is outstanding. It’s a mom and pop type of restaurant with minimal décor. It could be described as All American and soul food. Their signature dishes include melt in your mouth ribs, BBQ wings, and chicken fried steak. For appetizers, we had the wings which are exceptionally large and are dripping in this BBQ sauce that is perfection. The crunch under the sauce was still there.  Whenever I see halal steak available, it’s hard for me to resist and so that is what I ordered. Unfortunately it was too dry for my liking. The chef saw me and asked how everything was and I said the ribs were exceptional (I had some from my friend) but I mentioned that in my meal, the steak was a little dry. He insisted on bringing another one. We came with such a large party that there was so much food I was actually almost full due to the appetizers. I thought that would serve as a mutual agreement to not bring out any more dishes. Within minutes there was a full plate with ribs (and sides) in front of me. Exceptional service. The ribs were melt in your mouth delish and the meat just pulled off the ribs with such ease. (Restaurant is actually in Maryland about 25 mins from DC). Link here.

Burger 7: If you know anything about me, my all time favorite food is a burger. We have some good options in NYC but nothing that I am fully 100% head over heels in love with. Well, I just had one of my best burgers EVER in DC. Yes in DC. If you ever had Elevation Burger, I would say Burger 7 would be similar to it but substantially better. I felt like the meat was juicier and the B7 sauce added an extra kick of flavor with just the right amount of spice but not overpowering. The meat is 100% organic (free range grass fed) and it definitely adds to the taste. The burger is not too large. I ate one within minutes and ordered another one. You  can add toppings to your liking, which is probably another reason why I love it so (Restaurant is actually in Arlington but that’s only 10-15 minutes from DC). Link here.

(I think I am still looking for a burger spot that is preferably not a chain because I feel like that would be more authentic. Do you know of any? What’s your favorite halal burger spot?)

Ravi Kabob: I needed to get my traditional Pakistani/Indian meal fix on the last day of the trip so we picked up Ravi Kabob before heading back to NYC. They don’t carry biryani on Mondays so we had to order plain white rice and bread (naan). The bread was great even after we got back to the hotel room. They did have the chicken karahi which is a dry chicken in curry with tons of spice. It was bursting with all exotic flavors. It was so tasty that I couldn’t stop eating it. The entire order was devoured in a few minutes (restaurant is actually in Arlington but that’s only about 10-15 mins from DC). Link here.

So that was a summary of what I ate in DC. With food options this unique and delicious, I am definitely coming back to DC very soon!

Next post will be on my outfits and pics with friends and some fabulous ladies.

For the love of the July 4th Weekend

Maliha and Saqib from their Gaye Holud

Maliha and Saqib from their Gaye Holud

July 4th weekend is when America celebrates Independence Day and for most it is filled with family, friends, BBQ, pool parties, the beach and fireworks. This hardly ever holds true for me because there is always something a lot more important going on- there is always weddings July 4th weekend. Fittingly so, my husband and I got married the same weekend many (many) years ago. Ha. This year one of my friends got married and her wedding events dominated the weekend.

bride and I- 2 days before the wedding

bride and I- 2 days before the wedding

On July 4th, we had a pre wedding party to attend- the Gaye Holud (pronounced guy). This is a Bangladeshi term for a pre wedding party. A Gaye Holud is a fun festive non formal party before the wedding to get everyone in the mood. It’s filled with dancing, henna, music, food, décor and gifts. During a Gaye Holud, usually wedding clothes, jewelry and gifts are presented beautifully and exchanged. Holud itself is actually turmeric powder- that is a yellow spice. It is said to make the skin glow and at some Gaye Holuds, all the guests put the holud on the brides skin to give her a glow. The bride wore a sari in typical holud/mehndhi colors. Holud/mehndhi colors are usually yellow, green, orange and red. The bride also was adorned with artificial decorative floral jewelry to add to the festive feel. Many brides wear real flowers as well.

sister of the bride and I

sister of the bride and I

I wore a typical Pakistani mehndhi outfit consisting of bright colors. I wore a silk outfit with wide leg pants. The pink dupatta I used to cover my hair. The chiffon crinkle material was perfect to give a little extra volume. I bought it from Pakistan when I went on my first ever trip this past December. Yes you read correct, my first ever trip. I made a post on it, be sure to read about it here.

ladies only!

ladies only! look at all the vibrant colors!

The mehdnhi was separated the second half of the evening and the guys were asked to leave. This enabled all the girls to join in the dancing festivities by not having to cover up and being able to dance and perform the organized dances. I actually had to leave early and could not stay for the remainder of the Holud because I had work for 13 hours the next day.

bridal poses

bridal poses

Saturday was the wedding. The bride wore a beautiful forest green gown perfectly coordinated with cream. She didn’t wear typical red because she wore that color on her nikkah (religious wedding ceremony) about 8 months prior. The bride wore a Paksitani style outfit. The gown had a train and was heavily adorned with crystals in large motifs all throughout. Her dress sparkled from every direction and could be easily seen from every single corner of the hall. So stunning, Mashallah!

my hubby and I with the newlyweds

my hubby and I with the newlyweds

I wore a gown which I also got from my Pakistan trip. The gown I wore was one of my favorites. I loved it because the gown had all these extra details that made it so unique. It has horizontal pleats on the chest, ruching on the wrists, vertical pleats on the bottom hem, a jeweled neckline and large crystals embellishments in many different colors. The dark colors- black and gray which made it perfect for a nighttime wedding. The front was all embroidered with threadwork and crystals and faux pearls. There was so much work on the outfit, I didn’t wear any jewelry except one Swarovski cocktail ring.

in love with fariquas sari

in love with fariquas sari

This gown is actually just like an abaya/jilbab but heavily adorned. I enjoyed wearing it so much and I will definitely wear it to some of my friends’ weddings that are coming up! I actually had to wear my gown with flats but it worked out perfectly because my feet didn’t hurt and I was able to hold my kids with no difficulties (wearing heels and holding kids takes serious balancing skills- a skill that I have not mastered as of yet)

For the love of Houndstooth

houndstooth

houndstooth

If you are unaware, houndstooth is described as a checked pattern with broken/notched corners. Classic houndstooth is black and white but there are also different variations like brown paired with cream and blue paired with white. Houndstooth can be considered a standard print alongside with: leopard, zebra, chevron, stripes etc. I actually didn’t own anything with a houndstooth print until Embellished Wraps sent me this beautiful hijab/wrap/headscarf.

more houndstooth

more houndstooth

When I opened the package from Embellished Wraps, I slightly gasped because the colors, textures and material are top of the line. It’s so lush and lux. The simple blush pink color paired with the houndstooth and rosettes at the end is stunningly coordinated. It’s quite gorgeous and this hijab is such an easy way to add extra flair to an otherwise ordinary outfit. I was so excited to put together this post but had to delay it because of my demanding work schedule due to the fact that I just went away on a mini vacation last week. You can read all about my fun family trip to Vegas here and that was my first time I wore my hijab turban style.

For the love of The Bronx Zoo

Bronx zoo

Bronx zoo

Sunday is family fun day in my household and we always try to see family and friends and take the kids to fun activities if possible. Sunday started with a brunch hosted by one of my friends. Brunch was one dish style and people brought all sorts of various and delicious treats. I made a ginormous omelet and Aaisha of baking part time made delish chocolate chip Belgian waffles from scratch with homemade whipped cream and succulent strawberry toppings. You can check out her blog for yummy recipes.

After the immense eating fest, the best way to digest it all would be a great walk at the zoo and that’s exactly what we did! If you haven’t been to The Bronx zoo, you have to go. And if you think its small you are totally wrong. The Bronx zoo is huge and its actually impossible to see all of the exhibits in one day. We have a season pass and we go numerous times in the year. My kids are obsessed, they love it. When you are at the Bronx zoo, you would never realize you are actually in NYC, the tress, greenery and waterfalls totally throw you off. It’s so serene. You don’t need kids to enjoy it, it’s so scenic and natures beauty is truly captured here.

The kids love the tiger mountain and different exhibits like world of reptiles, congo (which has the gorillas and baboons) and Madagascar. They have a 4D theater and currently its displaying a short ice age movie. The kids usually love the 4D theater but the dinosaurs caused my youngest son to actually be a little scared. He didn’t sit through the entire movie. Their butterfly garden is one of my favorites because the butterflies are flying everywhere and its very hands on. There is a petting zoo for the kids as well and the kids can feed the goats, sheep etc. The Bronx Zoo also has the Bengali Express Monorail which is a relaxing monorail ride where you can see some of the larger animals like elephants. In the summer they have camel rides for the kids and face painting and all sorts of additional fun activities.

Here is my causal, laid back outfit of the day (OOTD) at The Bronx zoo.

Were you digging my graphic pants? I actually wore them in my first ever blog post. I definitely don’t shun from the fact that I repeat articles of clothing and outfits because it is necessary. In that post, I wore the same pants with a blazer and heels for a much more dressy look. Check it out here.

In my last post, about chunky watches I wanted to add a few words to it. While coming home from work last week, the cabs’ tv informed me that Michael Kors has a watch hunger stop campaign. With the purchase of their specific watch, they will donate to WFP- United Nations World Food Programme and that is enough for 100 meals! 1 watch= 1oo meals. That’s phenomenal, and I love when designers give back and make products where proceeds go to a great cause. The watch is $295 and comes in 4 different styles/sizes. The mid size is 38mm and the oversized is 45mm and it comes in both silver and gold. Fitting with my blog post, yes it is a chunky watch and that’s a win-win situation! Read my previous post on chunky watches here. I have included the link to purchase the watch here.
