For the love of the Chunky Watch

The chunky watch, boyfriend watch, oversized watch- whatever you may call it, it is a major trend right now. Chunky watches are the perfect functional accessory to every outfit from rugged to classy. A chunky watch is a watch that is about 40mm in diameter. Chunky watches come adorned with crystals, diamonds, mother of pearl, bling, various straps etc. all with one common feature: a large dial. Rachel Zoe, fashion icon and fashion stylist was asked if she could only wear one piece of jewelry for the rest of her life (besides for her engagement ring), what would it be. And she replied: “Honestly, a watch, a really chunky watch.”  And I would have to agree.

I recently purchased a rose gold tone chunky watch from smartbargains.com. I scored an amazing deal. It was on sale for $200 and then smart bargains gave a no brainer code (it’s when they drastically reduce the price but you must buy that specific item within one hour) and it brought it down to $100 with free shipping and it shipped tax free as well! I love smart bargains because it’s a website for designer brands for less and I have purchased some amazing items from them in the past. I love the rose gold because the color is great for the spring, summer and into the fall as well. The watch I bought has rose gold strap, dial and face which I like. Some watches have contrasting face or dial or strap but the type I prefer is when the entire watch is in the same color scheme. I feel like this ideally complements an outfit. Attached below is my rose gold watch perfectly coordinated with one of my bags that have rose gold hardware.

High end designer brands sometimes don’t carry the chunky watch but each high end designer company do have unisex watches at about 40mm and that would fall in to the same category as a chunky watch. Rolex and Breitling have womens’ watches usually up to 25-30mm which is too small. This is usually because high end is an investment timepiece and oftentimes high end doesn’t follow current trends as much. But if you buy a high end unisex watch you get the best of both worlds.

this is my friends Michael kors watch

this is my friends Michael kors watch

Michael Kors is one of the current go to brands for the chunky watch and it also has some watches with the diameter going all the way up to 45mm. Their styles are very diverse including dressy and trendy. While coming home from work last week, the cabs’ tv informed me that Michael Kors has a watch hunger stop campaign. With the purchase of their specific watch, they will donate to WFP- National World Food Programme and that is enough for 100 meals! 1 watch= 1oo meals. That’s phenomenal, and I love when designers give back and make products where proceeds go to a great cause. The watch is $295 and comes in 4 different styles/sizes. The mid size is 38mm and the oversized is 45mm and it comes in both silver and gold. Yes that is a chunky watch and that’s a win-win situation! I have included the link to purchase the watch here.

The Movado bold has a great face because it’s clean cut with a sharp edge and still classic. This one goes up to 43.5 mm on the large. Most of the chunky watches have a large round dial but some also come in rectangle. Michele is hands down the staple for the rectangle head. I love my Michele watch because it has a gold face, and dial with a gold interchangeable strap. The Michele watch is slightly smaller than the 40mm because it comes at about 35mm but the rectangular shape and elegance of the watch allows me to wear it everyday and even to weddings, which I have done in the past.

When I style my chunky watch into my outfit, I usually wear the watch solo, with no other arm candy on the left hand. On my right hand I load up on the arm candy. Most chunky watches need no extra accessories and I feel like extra accessories collide and take away from the watch itself. Wearing the watch on the left hand is a functional fashion statement all on its own and needs no added detail.

For the love of Fashion Fighting Famine

just arrived at the show

just arrived at the show

This past weekend I attended the Fashion Fighting Famine fashion show in California. It was a completely last minute trip as I booked my trip a few days before I flew out. Fashion Fighting Famine is one of the primary fashion shows that brings Muslim designers from across the world. This years fashion show had designers from Australia, London, Dubai, Pakistan, Paris and America. About 1000 people attended and a portion of the proceeds went to charity. The charity was New Star Family Center which is based in California.

The fashion show was Sunday evening and it was held at the Hyatt hotel in Irvine California. There was such a buzz of excitement leading up to the fashion show which flowed perfectly. I have never been to a fashion show before but this is exactly how I would have imagined it to be. There was the red carpet, backdrops, detailing, photographers, videographers the bazaar with all the designers and decor etc.  I wish I had more pics from the runway show itself, but only cell phone pics were allowed and because of all the lights and the models’ fast paced walking, the pics unfortunately did not come out recognizable. If you go to the website: fashionfightingfamine.com, you can see some pics from the runway show. Everyone was dressed to impress. The guests as well as the bloggers, designers etc were decked out head to toe in fashion fabulousness. The bazaar was open before, during and after the show. Prior to the fashion show I went in to the bazaar and I met all of the designers.

The runway show showcased 9 designers: Abaya Addict, INAYAH, Hijab House, Madamme BK, Mohajababes, Needlez, Nisaa Boutique, RAYAN, SixteenR. These designers had clothing, hijabs, accessories and even swimwear. I loved the swimwear collection because the material was perfect and light for the water and there was so much variety. You could mix and match the pieces in case you wanted to wear tights or pants or show the neck or not etc. Perfectly fit for everyones’ personal style and taste. U.S. brand Zeena was also featured in the presentation. At the bazaar, I purchased 2 hijabs from Zeena and my sister did as well. I loved their prints on their hijabs and the different varieties they had. The bazaar included more designers besides for the 9 from the runway including Hijab-ista. (I have previously purchased hijabs and accessories from Hijabista and I was pleased with the prompt service and products)

During the runway show, the first designer was Nisaa boutique. This set the pedestal very high for the remaining designers and they did not disappoint. Nisaa boutique had gorgeous kaftans and it ended with a bridal kaftan. At the mid point of the fashion show, there was a live musical performance by Yuna Zarai. Her style can be described as alternative, pop and acoustic. She plays the guitar and ukulele and her voice is gentle and soft. She performed a handful of songs and her voice sounds just as wonderful live if not better! She is world known and has such talent. Check out her website here.

Included are pics from the fashion show of some of the amazing ladies I met and got to spend time with during my fun filled weekend.

so happy I finally found Muhammad Ali’s star. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!

Muhammad Ali’s star is the only hollywood star that is not on the ground as per his request. He said he is named after our prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and he would never want the name Muhammad to be stepped on. Inspirational.

For the love of Birthday Cake

Birthday Cake

Birthday Cake

This blog post is going to be short and sweet. I have been so busy the last few weeks due to my Umrah trip and my mini girls getaway that I didn’t have enough time to come up with this post in proper chronological order. (You can read about both of my trips here: For the love of Umrah, and For the love of a Jersey Getaway). These pics are from a small birthday party my husband and I hosted for my closest family and friends for my birthday. (Read about For the love of Turning 30 here). My youngest sister @sepiacrayons took these amazing pics and I simply had to put them up. Also, I could not deprive you guys of all the fabulousness that was displayed at my party. The party was held at Mint Restaurant and Lounge in Long Island. The food was Indo-Asian cuisine and was splendid. Through mingling and socializing, I later realized no pictures of the food were taken, but the food was cooked to perfection. Spicy but still flavorful. These are my fashion forward friends who arrived in their modest fashionable attire. The delicious birthday cake was a complete surprise and my husband ordered it from: http://cmnycakes.com/
