For the love of the Belt Bag

img_0501

The belt bag is the more updated version of the fanny pack which all of us 80’s babies have bad memories of. When you make a belt bag leather with an adjustable belt and include brushed gunmetal hardware you come across the perfect mix of edgy and convenient. I always need my hands free and I wear this belt bag all the time. The belt can add shape to any loose fitted top as it did with this outfit. If you are following my Snapchat and Insta stories, I’m sure you can attest to the fact that I snapped this bag every single day for a week.

For the love of the Oversized Sweatshirt

img_0481

It has been over a year since my last post. In this last year, I have debated many times to get rid of my blog completely because I have been very inactive in my blog posts. I never got around to cancelling it because I simply could not. As it may provide you with inspiration, it provides me with some level of stability.

img_0483

Where have I been this past year? This past year has been one of my most felt years in as long as I can remember. I can easily say this has been one of my best years of life but it is directly following one of my worst years of life. I was at a very low point in my life and I finally took that first step and got help. I gave myself a huge break from things that took away from me focusing on myself and that’s when this blog took a back seat. I didn’t want to feel forced or pressured to make a post when I knew I wasn’t in a good place. Even still, I was busy organizing and participating in other projects that I felt were deserving of my time.

479

Typing up this post is a lot harder than I thought; it is quite difficult to make public something that has been left private. But in healing, I believe this needs to be done. Also, I am sharing this because I want to encourage you to get help and support if you are going through a tough time. There is light at the end of the tunnel. How you work on fixing yourself and the situation that is troubling you will bring you to the light more quickly than if you remained stagnant.

img_0491I wish I could better explain why I have been MIA but I can’t. What I can say is that I spent a lot of time trying to figure everything out and after a long time I had this very sudden urge to make a blog post. This life is too short for you to not do what you love. Make sure you do whatever it is that you desire and do it with a passion. Even with all the upsets that came this year, it is still one of the most important years in my personal growth. Initially, I wasn’t going to mention any of this, but that would be me being dishonest to myself and in addition, being unfair to all of you.

img_0495

Going forward, my new posts are going to focus more on what I wear every day. Previously, I felt like I would get dressed up for a photoshoot and then feel uncomfortable the rest of the day. Now my posts will be well repeated outfits- tried and true. I also gave the blog a simple update which makes it easier to maneuver. I already have another post set up to follow this one. It should be up next week but because of the Holiday it may be the following week.

For the love of the Long Sleeved Jumpsuit

jumpsuit

jumpsuit

This post was necessary since the day I started my blog. Without debate, my absolute favorite article of clothing is a jumpsuit. A jumpsuit is one piece, from top to bottom usually with a uniform print. Long sleeved jumpsuits are my favorite because it is the easiest way to look put together. It would be a no brainer outfit because the outfit is already complete. I have a bunch of long sleeved jumpsuits, and I wear them any chance I get.

jumpsuit

jumpsuit

With jumpsuits, accessorizing is key, because the accessories would be the differentiating factor. This is why it can be worn classy or casual with jewelry/heels to dress it up and flats to dress it down. I bought this jumpsuit months ago and I’ve worn it a few times but never got a chance to make a post. This camouflage print is perfect for fall but since it is an artisitic camo print and due to the mustard yellow, it can be worn any season.

backview

backview

Buying a jumpsuit can be difficult. It has to fit you well and sometimes you have to purchase one size larger because it’s just one piece and there has to be enough room to allow you to easily move. There are mainly 2 different styles to a jumpsuit. My particular favorite style is when the entire top is loose with slightly dolman shaped arms with a belt to bring in the waist. The pants should be loose on the hips and thighs but taper down to a small leg opening. It gives for a great overall shape and I feel it is still modest. If you get the right size, it is actually slimming. The excess fabric makes you look smaller and the waist can be tightened or loosened to your likening.

waist up

here you can see the belt

The other jumpsuit style would be fitting on the arms and chest/waist with pants that are fitted on the upper hips and then go straight down like palazzo pants and are usually wide. I feel like this style does not flatter my body. This style of jumpsuit is usually more dressy. I’ve seen this style in a structured material which is a great office look to evening and I’ve also seen it in a clingy material like spandex and that looks like it’s from the disco era. Ha.

I bought a floral printed jumpsuit from Zara a few months ago and even though it is short sleeved it has this same shape like this camo print jumpsuit. With, my short sleeved jumpsuits, I pair them with a blazer or wear connecting sleeves or a top underneath.

For the love of the Boho Chic Top

boho top

boho top

As warmer weather rolls around, what better time to wear a light and airy boho chic top than now? I love cotton tops for spring and summer because it keeps you cool. Spring is finally peaking here in NYC and so it was the perfect time to do this post.

top details

top details

This top is from Avow Apparel. It’s a new company that launched their Spring collection this March. Their fall line will be at New York Fashion Week at Relief on the Runway this September. I had the pleasure of bumping into Christina of Avow Apparel completely random at the rental car service in California. When there is something that makes you noticeably a Muslim (hijab in my case) it causes others to say Salaam (greeting Muslims say to one another meaning peace be upon you) and vice versa. An extra smile, Salaam and head nod can start up a conversation and that’s exactly what happened in this encounter.

turban style hijab

I can’t explain to you how unbelievably soft this top is. You totally feel like you are wearing nothing. It’s so light, breathable and soft but it’s double lined and it is not see through at all. The extra embroidery at the chest and the snap button details at  the arms make this top unique. The high low loose flow makes it a warm weather staple.

sitting

sitting

Christina told me her company was based upon a woman being spiritual, feminine and free. When she told me this, I politely smiled and nodded. When you hear what a company is supposed to be, sometimes you just smile and nod because you only half believe it and you have to actually see the clothes and wear them to believe it.  After putting on this top and doing my photoshoot with Antar of IAMSHOOTER I have to promise you I do believe what she said. I was at such ease while wearing this top and during the photoshoot. There was no worrying about if the dress flattered me from one side over the other or me wondering if it made me look fat or frumpy. I knew the top looked great at every angle and it’s loose enough that it hides any problem areas you may think you have. Also, I love the length of this top; it’s long enough to enable me to wear them with my (loose) skinny jeans.

tunnel

tunnel

This modest top made me feel so effortlessly boho chic. Not to mention the many compliments I got while wearing the top. This top is the Poet Maxi Top and I also have the Wandering Star Top which is extremely loose and flowy. The Bohemian Dreams Top didn’t fit quite right due to my exceptionally long torso. If you want a more fitted top you can try the Zahra top. The rest of them are very figure concealing but not in a plastic bag kind of way, but rather an effortlessly chic super feminine kind of way.

For the love of the High Waisted Palazzo Pant

high waisted palazzo pants

high waisted palazzo pants

I bought my first pair of high waisted palazzo pants and they are so effortlessly chic and super modest. I have pants that are mid to almost high waist but this is the first pair of pants that I own that are truly high waisted and actually sit on your natural waist. I wore it with a simple cotton top which was too long. I shortened the top to more properly show the full shape of the high waist and the loose flow. The easiest way to shorten a top is by tying a knot on the side and that’s exactly what I did. It did make me reminiscent of the 80’s when girls wore loose tie dyed tops and tied a knot or used a small clip to make the knot. I believe when I wore it for this shoot, it didn’t look quite like the 80’s, or did it? ha.

lake

crossed legs lake

By tying the knot on the side, it created a ruched effect which is great at minimizing the waist and hiding a belly (my stomach has more so become my problem area after pregnancies and it’s OK with me). I also love the slight bell shape of the sleeves. This totally enhances and goes with the look of the pants and adds a great voluminous overall shape. I realize the shirt could have still been a couple of inches shorter but this was the length I was comfortable at wearing it.

Outfit of the day (OOTD) details:

High waisted palazzo pant: Rachel Zoe. Rachel Zoe is a celebrity stylist for the stars and I love her style. It’s super effortless, modest and classy. (I wasn’t such a huge fan when she was going through her whole boho stage) I am kind of in love with her. I met her at a book signing when I was in California last month. After I met her I knew I wanted to do a post on these pants as soon as possible. I was just waiting for the weather to get a little warmer even though I bought the pants about 2 months prior. These pants are 100% silk and that makes the fall of the pants perfection. Added benefit: these pants hardly wrinkle. At the end of the post, I am attaching the pic I have with Rachel Zoe in case you missed it when I uploaded it to my instagram account @sanahrashid.

Simple cotton top: Gap.

Studded platform pumps: Brian Atwood. Well, of course you must pair Rachel Zoe with Brian Atwood. Is this being obnoxious? Perhaps, but I would like to think I styled these pants well.

Fringe bib necklace: Kenneth Jay Lane purchased on sale at ruelala.com

with Rachel Zoe

with Rachel Zoe

I am not embarrassed to admit I had a total fan girl moment when I met Rachel Zoe. I get so much fashion inspiration from her. Here I am with Rachel Zoe and some of my awesome gal pals: Nura and Ibtihaj from our trip to California last month.

For the love of the Long Sleeve Long Dress

long sleeve long dress swinging

I realize this title is super general but I chose it because a long sleeve long dress is perfection. It’s a one piece go to. It can be easily accessorized with a belt, blazer, cardigan, vest etc. This post is also dedicated to my love for the long sleeve long dress and my own gradual transformation of adding it to my wardrobe and my acceptance of it. I have to admit I have never ever been a fan of dresses. I kind of sit obnoxiously at times, with my feet up and it’s very hard to do when you are wearing a dress/skirt. Also, a lot of long dresses don’t flatter me in the least. They are either way too loose or way too fitted. I could never find modest fitted dresses and so I steered clear of them for the longest time.

long sleeve long dress swings

So what changed and why do I wear more dresses/skirts? It is simply because dresses are now so much more trendy with gorgeous detailing and flattering fits mixed with beautiful prints. Also, the look you get with pants and a top can’t compare to the flow of wearing a one piece dress. I think this has a huge thing to do with the impact of modest fashion in the fashion industry. I could have never imagined it would be so easy to find a long sleeve long dress at the shopping malls, regular retail stores and online. Essentially this dress is almost like an abaya/jilbab right? I purchased this dress recently and was so excited to wear this dress and do this post/shoot especially because I wanted to share my own transformation of wearing more dresses with you all. (Outfit of the day details below)

Cotton long sleeve long dress: Rachel Pally. I love this dress because it has a tie waist and the Aztec/Tribal print makes it super trendy. The soft colors with the hint of coral makes it wearable in the spring and summer as well. This NYC cold allowed me to perfectly pair it with a fur vest.

Fur vest: Michael Kors. I also wore this vest here and this entire post was dedicated to it. (Obviously I wore this with a vest because why would you hide the beauty of the fact that this dress is long sleeved by covering it up with a blazer or cardigan.)

Linen scarf: Sachi

For the love of the Boxy Blazer

boxy blazer

boxy blazer

Currently blazers are in heavy rotation in my wardrobe. Now that the weather is colder, blazers are a chic and modest way to layer if you want to stay away from sweaters. I love how they can dress up an outfit and complete a look. They are great for work, for casual and for going out. Blazers come in various lengths, styles, colors and details and I can’t seem to get enough.

I usually purchase a blazer with the same style- generally fitted on the waist with shoulder pads. I like long and short lengths. I decided to go out of my comfort zone and purchase a boxy blazer; this one happens to be shorter in length. A boxy blazer does not cinch at the waist and can tend to make you look, well, boxy of course. The boxy fit makes it extra modest. To avoid looking shapeless you can wear a boxy blazer with more fitted pants and heels to elongate your look and balance out the boxiness of the top. It looks great with front pleated pants or harem pants. This blazer has metallic panel accents on the shoulders which wrap to the back as well. It’s collarless and has a layered look at the front completing its laid back sophisticated feel.

Outfit of the day (OOTD) details:

Boxy Blazer: Rachel Roy purchased on ruelala.com for $95. Also, my first ever post on my blog was dedicated to blazers. You can check out that post here.

Leather pants: Helmut Lang also worn in one of my previous posts. I explained the pants in more detail and you can see how I wore the pants with a similar color scheme but a totally different look. Check out that post here.

Headscarf: purchased at Century21

Black silk shirt: Go silk purchased at ruelala.com. I wore it high low style by tucking it in the front. The shirt has to be tucked in the front because you don’t want to cover the front pleats of the pants and because of the tie belt. I left the top longer in the back. I actually wore this same exact top in my last post. Check out the post here.
