For the love of a Desert Safari

keeping warm with the fire

keeping warm by the fire

I just got back from a short trip to Dubai which was a pit stop on the way to Madinah and Makkah to perform Umrah. I traveled with my husband and 2 of our friends. We stayed in Dubai for 3 nights but it was a very short trip because we arrived Friday night and left Monday morning. In Dubai, our itinerary was jam packed with things to do because, well there’s so much to do! Dubai is such a new city. Everything is extra beautiful, extra over the top and extra lux. But my favorite parts of Dubai was the old city of Dubai- Dubai City of Gold also called the Gold Souq.

Dubai City of Gold

Dubai City of Gold

The old city of Dubai reminded me of Pakistan and the walled inner city by the Wazir Khan Mosque (I blogged about my trip to Pakistan and you can read all about it here) but a cleaner and safer version of it. It was 1 dirham (about 27 cents) to get there by boat and it was so enjoyable that we did it twice. The Gold Souq was a great place to buy souvenirs, clothes, and small odds and ends. Being a New Yorker, the feeling of safety you felt in Dubai was unparalleled; Dubai is one of the safest cities in the world.

The absolute highlight of my trip was the desert safari hands down. We booked it in advance through: beyondthedunes.com and it was a private tour. The rest of the tours are in groups. We thought it would be a great experience for just the 4 of us and the guide and it definitely was. We were picked up by Ahid himself. He was in charge of everything and he’s a one man show. The desert safari included everything. He does everything from picking us up, to sand dune bashing, sand boarding, to setting up the tents, and preparing the meals and setting up the fire.

ATVing- my first time

ATVing- my first time

Our first stop was the ATVing, then we did sand dune bashing with Ahid in control of driving and after that we did sand boarding. I posted a ridiculously funny video of me sand boarding and it is up on instagram. While sand dune bashing we saw Arabian Oryx which is a rarity. These animals were almost extinct and now there are only about 1100 living in the wild. We saw about 10 in the desert that day.

The dinner was perfection. There was spicy wings, chicken kebabs and lamp chops accompanied with humus and different sauces, salads, and bread. We devoured the whole meal which was so fresh and delicious.

all of us huddled by the fire

It was slightly cold but being seated on the cushions by the fire, you could hardly feel the cold. I even took a nap under the stars in the night sky in the desert. It was so peaceful. If you are ever going to Dubai I can’t recommend this desert safari tour enough. Our entire trip was a hectic rush because we wanted to make ample use of our time and during the desert safari we were finally able to fully relax and enjoy the true beauty of Dubai and experience the desert as it should be enjoyed.

(All pics were taken with my Iphone so it’s not the best of quality but we didn’t want to be burdened with an actual camera in the desert. Also, I wish I took more pics but we were enjoying ourselves and the serenity of the desert that even these few pics I had to remind myself or someone else to take it.)

Thanks so much for reading. I’m so embarrassed that I have not blogged in almost 2 months but work and life has taken over the last few months. I’ve been extremely busy and I’m so sorry for the lack of posts. Last month marked my one year blog anniversary! I don’t believe its been an entire year. I really wanted to do a post on my reflections of the past year but this trip and work consumed my life the last few weeks and I truly just did not have time. My apologies.

For the love of HijabFest

(This post should be properly titled: For the love of HijabFest and Getting Over My Fear Of Public Speaking but I decided due to the longevity I wouldn’t use that as my title. But that’s exactly what this post is)

Hijabfest

Hijabfest

New Brunswick Islamic Center (NBIC) hosted its first ever HijabFest in New Jersey this past Sunday. I was invited to give a small presentation on modest fashion. I agreed. I thought it would be more of a workshop on the side and I didn’t realize I would be on stage front and center. One of my greatest fears is public speaking. I despise it. I get nervous, start sweating, stammering, shaking etc. It’s not a pleasant sight to see and it’s quite embarrassing actually. Some people are scared of heights, bugs, spiders, whatever it may be and public speaking is it for me. Friends and classmates can attest to this fact and they all say it’s the strangest thing because it doesn’t fit my personality at all. For whatever reason, it is what it is. I decided not to cancel after realizing I would be front and center because I had already given my word. I debated taking drugs to calm my nerves but I don’t like taking prescription drugs unless it’s very necessary and so I decided against it. (OTC drugs are a different story. If you have a minor ache, pain or fever take a Tylenol or Ibuprofen. Or take two. You will feel great afterwards)

Upon arrival, Hijabfest was a sold out event (it sold out a few days before the event) and the entire area was buzzing. It was a smaller venue so it was pretty full to capacity. There was a great fashion show from some of the designers there. Each designer showcased 3 looks. I captured a few of them but it was hard to because I was running in and out because I had to make arrangements for my presentation. Some of the designers at the event included: Kotton Love, May Ade Designs, True Faith Apparel, Bulbul, Laila’s Collection, Unique Hijabs, and Amirah Couture. I especially loved the jilbabs from Bulbul, the scarves from kottonlove and I loved the variety and affordability of the hijabs at Al-Mujalbaba.

There was some enlightening speeches which were great everyday reminders. It was a well thought out, well organized event and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

My presentation was scheduled for 3:45 and at about 2:30 I met backstage with my models, one of them being my sister. I was going to present 4 outfits and 2 hijab tutorials. I got all the girls dressed in coordinating outfits and hijabs from my personal collection. Then it was showtime. I was shaking, my heart was beating through my chest and I couldn’t even stand. I took a seat behind stage while I was being introduced. My sister and all the models were so supportive and told me to relax and calm down and breathe slowly. That helped a bit. I wanted to turn around and run (just kidding?) but obviously I knew I couldn’t. So there was no turning back, indeed it was showtime.

Prior to HijabFest, I went over what I wanted to say a few times and I went over it with a friend the night before. I didn’t write anything out because that tends to make me more nervous. So I just winged it. No papers, no index cards, no cellphone and I just did it. I was nervous and my voice did stammer at times and when it was done I realized my presentation was 20 minutes long! It was so much easier than in school because this wasn’t a report and I wasn’t getting a grade on it. Also, I was doing something I take pleasure in so that must have made it easier. I was thoroughly impressed with myself. Alhamdulilah. I may have overcome one of my fears in doing something I enjoy. How wonderful! :)

I met some great girls from NYC and NJ. I added some backstage pics with my models and some pics during the presentation on my instagram account @sanahrashid. You can check that out here.

For the love of DC

I came to DC with some friends to attend the ISNA convention. ISNA stands for Islamic Society North America and the ISNA convention is a convention held annually which brings speakers from all across America to enlighten us with some great lectures and workshops. There is also a bazaar which has clothes, paintings, furniture, jewelry etc from all over. It’s great to hang out with friends from near and far because these conventions bring tons of people together from all over.

I finally got to meet some people I have been networking with. One of them is Farrah of go to Greater Lengths . She’s awesome and I love her blog! You can read all about it here. She did a great section on ISNA as well entitled Modest Marvel and highlighted girls who she thought were dressed fashionably and modest and it is definitely worth checking! I spent a good amount of time at the bazaar because of the great hijab shopping. I bought hijabs from KottonLove and Zeena. I also bought hijabs from Zeena when I went to Fashion Fighting Famine in California. I love their unique prints! I bought a headscarf with chains on it. I am loving chains as a print and wearing chunky chains as well. It’s definitely a trend this season.

Monday we did tons of sightseeing with the kiddies. We went to the Smithsonian Institute- National Air and Space museum and there was no admission fee! And I was surprised it was actually open because it was labor day (in NYC everything is closed). It’s so great to see different cities and how they each function uniquely. We also did touristy stuff and went to the National monument, Reflection Pool and Lincoln’s Memorial.

For the love of Washington D.C. – Food Edition

I travelled to DC for Labor day weekend with friends and family. The post was getting so long that I had to split it up. Here is the food edition of my DC trip. It’s a detailed description of the restaurants I went to. (some of these restaurants are actually not in DC but 10-25 mins away)

Busboys and Poets: very trendy laidback “community gathering place”. The chicken is halal and the meat is kosher. There are tons of vegetarian options, dessert, drinks and coffee. A major added plus is it’s completely inexpensive. I had the chicken Panini and some of my friends had the steak and asparagus salad which was a mere $13. It had 3 pieces of steak, salad with asparagus, dressing and gorgonzola cheese. It was so fresh. The dessert was great as well. I had iced mocha (twice) and shared desserts with friends. I loved their cheesecake. Link here. I cant emphasize how much I loved this place, probably one of the reasons I came here 3 times during my stay!

RJ cafe: this restaurant is nothing fancy but the food is outstanding. It’s a mom and pop type of restaurant with minimal décor. It could be described as All American and soul food. Their signature dishes include melt in your mouth ribs, BBQ wings, and chicken fried steak. For appetizers, we had the wings which are exceptionally large and are dripping in this BBQ sauce that is perfection. The crunch under the sauce was still there.  Whenever I see halal steak available, it’s hard for me to resist and so that is what I ordered. Unfortunately it was too dry for my liking. The chef saw me and asked how everything was and I said the ribs were exceptional (I had some from my friend) but I mentioned that in my meal, the steak was a little dry. He insisted on bringing another one. We came with such a large party that there was so much food I was actually almost full due to the appetizers. I thought that would serve as a mutual agreement to not bring out any more dishes. Within minutes there was a full plate with ribs (and sides) in front of me. Exceptional service. The ribs were melt in your mouth delish and the meat just pulled off the ribs with such ease. (Restaurant is actually in Maryland about 25 mins from DC). Link here.

Burger 7: If you know anything about me, my all time favorite food is a burger. We have some good options in NYC but nothing that I am fully 100% head over heels in love with. Well, I just had one of my best burgers EVER in DC. Yes in DC. If you ever had Elevation Burger, I would say Burger 7 would be similar to it but substantially better. I felt like the meat was juicier and the B7 sauce added an extra kick of flavor with just the right amount of spice but not overpowering. The meat is 100% organic (free range grass fed) and it definitely adds to the taste. The burger is not too large. I ate one within minutes and ordered another one. You  can add toppings to your liking, which is probably another reason why I love it so (Restaurant is actually in Arlington but that’s only 10-15 minutes from DC). Link here.

(I think I am still looking for a burger spot that is preferably not a chain because I feel like that would be more authentic. Do you know of any? What’s your favorite halal burger spot?)

Ravi Kabob: I needed to get my traditional Pakistani/Indian meal fix on the last day of the trip so we picked up Ravi Kabob before heading back to NYC. They don’t carry biryani on Mondays so we had to order plain white rice and bread (naan). The bread was great even after we got back to the hotel room. They did have the chicken karahi which is a dry chicken in curry with tons of spice. It was bursting with all exotic flavors. It was so tasty that I couldn’t stop eating it. The entire order was devoured in a few minutes (restaurant is actually in Arlington but that’s only about 10-15 mins from DC). Link here.

So that was a summary of what I ate in DC. With food options this unique and delicious, I am definitely coming back to DC very soon!

Next post will be on my outfits and pics with friends and some fabulous ladies.

For the love of the Big Apple Circus

circus

circus

About a month ago, I attended the Big Apple Circus when it was in town. I went with my husband and both our sons. It was held at Cunningham park in Queens. Very many years ago when I was in Junior High School, I remember going to the circus on a Friday night with some of my girlfriends and it was nostalgic to be back at the same place well over a decade later.

The acts were unique to the Big Apple and they incorporated parts of NYC life into the circus acts. For example the dog show was set to take place in central park because back in the day that was the weekend activity- walking dogs in the park and the tightrope walk act was shown to be walking over the Verrazano bridge.

circus

circus

The Big Apple Circus is such a lovely family tradition. It’s smaller scale than a larger circus like the Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey circus which is usually held at a much larger venue. I attended this circus in my childhood and I remember that it was my first time ever going to Madison Square Garden which was very exciting. The Big Apple Circus gives off a neighborhood vibe by being held at the park. The circus is complete with typical circus food which was available for purchase consisting of popcorn, soda, hot dogs, cotton candy etc. adding to the laidback feel. The kids loved it and it was quite enjoyable by all. (There are no pics of the show itself because photography was not allowed inside.)

For the love of The Halal Food Tour

halal food tour

halal food tour

This past sunday was the Halal Food Tour presented by Sameer of Sameer’s Eats and his team including Saad Malik and Faraz Khan. If you don’t know who Sameer is, he is a halal foodie. He checks outs halal food spots around the country. The Halal Food tour was held at the Teaneck armory in New Jersey. This was the first ever tour with the second stop being in New Jersey. The first stop was in Irvine, California a few months prior. (Last year they had a halal food festival in New Jersey).

If you want to act hard, pose in front of a tank with shades on

There were many food vendors all around the field including Chal Chilli, Chinese Mirch, Kabab Paradise, Kasra Restaurant, Especially For-U-Cakes, Zaika BBQ &Grill, Pizza Time, Lal Qila to name a few. There was a kids large inflatable bouncy house and a few clothing stalls as well. The stage was set up in the front.

For my late lunch I had burgers from Kabab Paradise because burgers are my all time favorite food.

The burger was surprisingly delicious. Often, outdoor food tends to taste generic and not as flavorful. But the burger was grilled to perfection and the meat patty was seasoned and of a generous portion. The toppings were the perfect finishing touch to the burger and I was quite content.

There was a break for Asr prayer. Soon after was the Iron chef competition which was one of the main events of the program. Earlier in the day, Yvonne Maffei of Myhalalkitchen.com gave a chicken parmesan demonstration but I missed that. For the Iron chef competition there was 4 spots/teams and one spot opened up last minute and a last minute contestant joined with her sister. The first dish was chicken strips sponsored by crescent foods and there was 20 mins allotted to finish. The secret ingredient was apricots and it had to be incorporated into the meal. The 2nd half was dessert and each team had 10 minutes to prepare the dish. They were given cake and biscuits as a base.

The judges were the mayor of Teaneck- Mohammad Hameeduddin, Sameer Sarmast and Ibtihaj Muhammad who is a member of the United States fencing team. She is the first muslim women to represent the United States in international competition. The judges are on stage overlooking the contestants wearing the white chef hats and Aman Ali was moderating the competition. I was heartbroken beyond belief. I was angry for days, weeks, months and then eventually I got over it. I was so young, only in the 5th grade or so. It makes me extremely happy to see Ibtihaj able to be on the fencing team and able to do so while still being dressed modestly and wearing the head covering. Also, I think I was in awe at how she exudes such grace and class Mashallah. What a stunner and an amazing role model and a true inspiration. You can check out her facebook page here.

I especially like this top because of its longer length and loose fit. It also has crystals and bead work along the neckline for an extra flair to a plain tunic.

Mustard pants: Esprit, which I wear all the time. These are the perfect color for spring, summer and fall. They are so soft and comfortable and have a slim leg without being tight. I also wore them in a prior post, you can read about it here.

For the love of Vegas

me in Vegas

me in Vegas

For the love of Vegas. May I assume your initial reaction? A little hesitant. Maybe some confusion and maybe some agreement. Some of you are probably thinking what is a girl like me doing in a place like Vegas where alcohol, gambling and clubbing/partying is rampant especially since I don’t partake in any of those activities. And this can be one of the reasons why I haven’t been to Vegas before. But there is so much more to Vegas than what I listed above. There are tons of shows, kid friendly activities, shopping galore and amazing dining options! Whats not to love?!

me with a turban style hijab

Me with a turban style hijab. My face is very oily as per usual, my apologies. This was from dinner at AquaKnox

This past Memorial Day weekend my husband and I went to Las Vegas with my kids and my brother in law. We met up with a few friends who were staying for the weekend with their families as well. Saturday night was the first time I wore my hijab turban style inspired by the gorgeous Nura of @nuralailalov. I loved it. This turban style is so fun and different. Saturday night dinner was at AquaKnox which is in the Venetian where we were staying for our trip. I had the crab stuffed maine lobster. And that was easily the best lobster I’ve ever had. The dining options in Vegas are out of this world. So many fine dining options. NYC definitely still has the best restaurants, but Las Vegas has a lot of them as well like: Mesa Grill, Serendipity3, Sushi Samba, Tao, Nobu, Grand Lux just to name a few. After dinner, we went to catch a cirque du soleil show- Mystere.

(This is a very long post. I attached outfit of the day details to each day.)

On Sunday morning we got breakfast buffet at Caesars Palace and it was better than our previous mornings breakfast buffet from Wynn. Caesars Palace had slightly more halal food options. It seemed never ending. After that we went to Mandalay Bay because they had an aquarium. The kids enjoyed it so much. It’s not large but it has tons of sharks and a stingray petting section. The aquarium was set up beautifully with all the details and statues. It reminded me of the aquariums at Atlantis but much smaller scale. Below are pictures from the aquarium and my simple daytime no makeup look.

Sunday night was our second show and we watched Le Reve. It was amazing. Probably one of the best shows I’ve watched. It had less stunts but it had a story line and it was fully entertaining. I love these shows by cirque du soleil because I feel like they are a circus and broadway combined. In the evening I wore the same outfit, but I just put on makeup and I wore matching wrist cuff bracelets.

Sunday is family fun day in my household and we always try to see family and friends and take the kids to fun activities if possible. Sunday started with a brunch hosted by one of my friends. Brunch was one dish style and people brought all sorts of various and delicious treats. I made a ginormous omelet and Aaisha of baking part time made delish chocolate chip Belgian waffles from scratch with homemade whipped cream and succulent strawberry toppings. You can check out her blog for yummy recipes.

After the immense eating fest, the best way to digest it all would be a great walk at the zoo and that’s exactly what we did! If you haven’t been to The Bronx zoo, you have to go. And if you think its small you are totally wrong. The Bronx zoo is huge and its actually impossible to see all of the exhibits in one day. We have a season pass and we go numerous times in the year. My kids are obsessed, they love it. When you are at the Bronx zoo, you would never realize you are actually in NYC, the tress, greenery and waterfalls totally throw you off. It’s so serene. You don’t need kids to enjoy it, it’s so scenic and natures beauty is truly captured here.

The kids love the tiger mountain and different exhibits like world of reptiles, congo (which has the gorillas and baboons) and Madagascar. They have a 4D theater and currently its displaying a short ice age movie. The kids usually love the 4D theater but the dinosaurs caused my youngest son to actually be a little scared. He didn’t sit through the entire movie. Their butterfly garden is one of my favorites because the butterflies are flying everywhere and its very hands on. There is a petting zoo for the kids as well and the kids can feed the goats, sheep etc. The Bronx Zoo also has the Bengali Express Monorail which is a relaxing monorail ride where you can see some of the larger animals like elephants. In the summer they have camel rides for the kids and face painting and all sorts of additional fun activities.

Here is my causal, laid back outfit of the day (OOTD) at The Bronx zoo.

Were you digging my graphic pants? I actually wore them in my first ever blog post. I definitely don’t shun from the fact that I repeat articles of clothing and outfits because it is necessary. In that post, I wore the same pants with a blazer and heels for a much more dressy look. Check it out here.

In my last post, about chunky watches I wanted to add a few words to it. While coming home from work last week, the cabs’ tv informed me that Michael Kors has a watch hunger stop campaign. With the purchase of their specific watch, they will donate to WFP- United Nations World Food Programme and that is enough for 100 meals! 1 watch= 1oo meals. That’s phenomenal, and I love when designers give back and make products where proceeds go to a great cause. The watch is $295 and comes in 4 different styles/sizes. The mid size is 38mm and the oversized is 45mm and it comes in both silver and gold. Fitting with my blog post, yes it is a chunky watch and that’s a win-win situation! Read my previous post on chunky watches here. I have included the link to purchase the watch here.

For the love of Fashion Fighting Famine

just arrived at the show

just arrived at the show

This past weekend I attended the Fashion Fighting Famine fashion show in California. It was a completely last minute trip as I booked my trip a few days before I flew out. Fashion Fighting Famine is one of the primary fashion shows that brings Muslim designers from across the world. This years fashion show had designers from Australia, London, Dubai, Pakistan, Paris and America. About 1000 people attended and a portion of the proceeds went to charity. The charity was New Star Family Center which is based in California.

The fashion show was Sunday evening and it was held at the Hyatt hotel in Irvine California. There was such a buzz of excitement leading up to the fashion show which flowed perfectly. I have never been to a fashion show before but this is exactly how I would have imagined it to be. There was the red carpet, backdrops, detailing, photographers, videographers the bazaar with all the designers and decor etc.  I wish I had more pics from the runway show itself, but only cell phone pics were allowed and because of all the lights and the models’ fast paced walking, the pics unfortunately did not come out recognizable. If you go to the website: fashionfightingfamine.com, you can see some pics from the runway show. Everyone was dressed to impress. The guests as well as the bloggers, designers etc were decked out head to toe in fashion fabulousness. The bazaar was open before, during and after the show. Prior to the fashion show I went in to the bazaar and I met all of the designers.

The runway show showcased 9 designers: Abaya Addict, INAYAH, Hijab House, Madamme BK, Mohajababes, Needlez, Nisaa Boutique, RAYAN, SixteenR. These designers had clothing, hijabs, accessories and even swimwear. I loved the swimwear collection because the material was perfect and light for the water and there was so much variety. You could mix and match the pieces in case you wanted to wear tights or pants or show the neck or not etc. Perfectly fit for everyones’ personal style and taste. U.S. brand Zeena was also featured in the presentation. At the bazaar, I purchased 2 hijabs from Zeena and my sister did as well. I loved their prints on their hijabs and the different varieties they had. The bazaar included more designers besides for the 9 from the runway including Hijab-ista. (I have previously purchased hijabs and accessories from Hijabista and I was pleased with the prompt service and products)

During the runway show, the first designer was Nisaa boutique. This set the pedestal very high for the remaining designers and they did not disappoint. Nisaa boutique had gorgeous kaftans and it ended with a bridal kaftan. At the mid point of the fashion show, there was a live musical performance by Yuna Zarai. Her style can be described as alternative, pop and acoustic. She plays the guitar and ukulele and her voice is gentle and soft. She performed a handful of songs and her voice sounds just as wonderful live if not better! She is world known and has such talent. Check out her website here.

Included are pics from the fashion show of some of the amazing ladies I met and got to spend time with during my fun filled weekend.

so happy I finally found Muhammad Ali’s star. Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee!

Muhammad Ali’s star is the only hollywood star that is not on the ground as per his request. He said he is named after our prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and he would never want the name Muhammad to be stepped on. Inspirational.

For the love of a Jersey Getaway

me at Revel

As a New Yorker, I am slightly hesitant on the title of this post but my mini Jersey getaway was so relaxing and enjoyable that this post was necessary (haha)! I met up with a bunch of fabulous girls this past weekend for our 2nd annual girls getaway (last year we went to Miami). No boys and no babies/kids. This large group of girls consists of housewives, doctors, dentists, social workers, teachers, mommies and everything in between. This was a mini getaway because it was actually just one night but our itinerary was fully packed with activities. We arrived at Revel for brunch followed by a relaxing afternoon at the Bask Spa. I have never been to a spa before so this was an enjoyable experience for me.

After feeling rejuvenated, all the girls got dressed up for our dinner reservations at Cuba Libre. The food at Cuba Libre did not disappoint. The appetizers were so diverse and were served family style. It consisted of bread and spiced mango butter, shrimps and scallops, yuca frita (kind of like french fries), frituras de malanga (similar to pakoras and these were my favorite), and plantain and malanga chips served with 3 different dips- black bean hummus, cuba libre salsa, and smoked marlin salad. These appetizers were delicious and seemed never ending! The staff was very accommodating to our large party of 20+ girls and gave us vegetarian selections and made sure everything was alcohol free. We also ordered fruity mocktails like mango mint mojito and pina coladas which were fresh and delish. Dinner was surprisingly outstanding. I ordered mahi mahi which melted in your mouth with flavor. I was upset I could not finish my meal but it’s probably because I could not stop eating those appetizers! Included is my outfit of the night (OOTN) and some pics of these fabulously fashionable girls.

Karaoke topped off the evening. We rented a room at the same hotel as Cuba Libre and when you put 20+ girls in one room, absolute silliness and singing passions emerged. The following day we had breakfast at the Alcove at Revel and requested a late check out. The wonderful hotel staff accommodated this for all of us. We hung out, and enjoyed the hotel which is a lot more classy and sophisticated then some of the other atlantic city hotels.
