For the love of the 10 minute Dessert Dish

and it tastes better than it looks

and it tastes better than it looks!

The food part of my blog is always neglected and so this post is strictly food! This is the first recipe I am posting on my blog and it’s hardly a recipe. It’s the quickest way to put together a dessert dish if you are hosting a party or attending a party and are strapped for time. This kind of seems to be describing my life lately. (Believe it or not but I rarely cook). This recipe is a rendition of Paula Deen’s Banana Split Ice Cream recipe. I dislike bananas in dessert and so I excluded it from the recipe.

Ingredients:

1. 9×13 inch pan

2. 24 ice cream sandwiches

3. Sugar cones

4. Toffee bits

5. Caramel syrup

6. Chocolate syrup

7. Heavy Cream

8. Sugar

yum

yum

Directions:

1. Place ice cream sandwiches on the bottom of the pan. It takes about 11 and a half sandwiches to cover the bottom of the pan.

2. Crush the sugar cones on the top of the ice cream sandwiches. I crushed about 6 cones.

3. Sprinkle toffee bits on top of the crushed cones- I used Hershey’s Heath and you can buy it in the baking section. If you prefer to put bananas, strawberries etc you can add it in this layer.

4. Place second layer of ice cream sandwiches.

5. Whip heavy cream to make whipped cream. I love fresh whipped cream and so I whipped it myself. You can totally bypass this step by using Cool Whip if you would like. To make whipped cream, pour heavy cream in a blender. I use a cup whipped cream to about 2 tablespoons of sugar to make it sweet whipped cream and you can use more or less sugar to cater to your sweetness level. Turn on the blender until its thick and does not move. You don’t have to use a blender and can whip by hand. Place on top of the ice cream sandwiches

6. Drizzle caramel syrup and chocolate syrup on top of the whipped cream.

7. Sprinkle toffee bits on top.

8. Place in freezer until it is time to serve

Serves about 10-12

For the love of a Health Fair

This past Sunday I volunteered at a Health Fair at Jamaica Muslim Center in Queens. It was sponsored by BAPA- Bangladeshi American Pharmacists Association. It was organized by younger members of BAPA who are pharmacists as well. These young organizers brought a lot of enthusiasm and energy to the fair. It was catered to the elderly and those who can’t afford or don’t have health insurance and people who have language barriers. These barriers may hinder them from receiving proper care and/or compliance in taking their medication.

the organizers from left to right- Suhayr, Mohammed and Tasmiya

I spoke to the organizers and asked them why they had set up this fair and they stated that being in the health care field you always want to be able to give back in the best way you know how. They continued on to explain that there are lots of misunderstandings with the elderly in regards to nutrition and how to control certain disease states. Due to lack of communication because of language barriers, sometimes these very simple aspects are neglected. One of the main goals of this fair was to provide simple lifestyle changes that can have a large impact in improvement of symptoms and control disease states like hypertension and diabetes.

patients receiving counselling on health, medication and nutrition

patients receiving counselling on health, medication and nutrition

The remarkable thing was that there were so many volunteers and the patients were able to be seen right away. The volunteers consisted of not just fellow pharmacists but also physicians, counselors, ophthalmologists, psychologists and people who wanted to dedicate their time to help out. It was actually more of a free health clinic because all sorts of services were offered like: blood pressure testing, blood glucose testing, eye exams, medication counselling and immunization counselling. There was mental health and nutrition booths providing counselling services and of course physicians were giving exams and catering to the patients’ questions and concerns as well. There was tons of free stuff like first aid kits, pill boxes, pamphlets etc. Healthy refreshments were also served- quinoa which is a grain and a great substitute for rice for diabetic patients, salad and fruit along with coffee, croissants and donuts.

Nazia and Sadia with their mental health booth

Nazia and Sadia with their mental health booth

I was talking to Sadia who is a psychologist and Nazia who is a counselor and they were saying that mental health counselling and attending therapy sessions in certain communities is taboo. It is looked down upon and this is why many people will not admit that they or a loved one need therapy. This was one of the main reasons why Sadia and Nazia said they wanted to have a booth- to encourage people to seek help and to dispel the misconceptions that mental health and therapy is taboo. For more information on Dr, Sadia Chaudhury’s practice, or to refer someone for therapy, please click on the link for her website- www.drsadia.com. She has 2 locations where she practices.

For the love of Attending an NFL Game

team

Giants- offense. During the game, we had great seats!

Football is my favorite sport for many reasons. The number one reason is because each of the 16 games count towards the playoffs. I also love how the entire game is exciting from start to finish. I believe a big reason for this is because each touchdown is worth so many points. You have to follow every play because each team can score at any given moment due to fumbles, interceptions, kickoff returns, punt returns, passing touchdowns, rushing touchdowns etc.

photo (5)

hubby and I before the game started

As a New Yorker you can obviously assume my favorite team. If you guessed the NY Giants you are correct! I attended a football game with my husband this past weekend. We usually try to attend at least one game together each season. This was the first game of the season that we attended and the Giants beat the Oakland Raiders, improving their record to 3-6. Do they still have a chance to make it to the playoffs? If the rest of the teams in their division keep losing, they definitely have a chance. It would be phenomenal if they can make it to the Superbowl because the Superbowl will actually be held at MetLife stadium (where both the Giants and Jets play) in February 2014.

Outfit of the day (OOTD) details:

chilling with snoopy before the game started

My outfit was very simple: I wore a customized NY giants hoodie sweatshirt purchased on nflshop.com. I wore it with a long t shirt, a turtleneck and a turban style hijab. I fully coordinated the team colors of red and blue and topped it off with some RiRi Woo lipstick from MAC. I can’t get enough of a red lipstick. I wore comfortable warm boots and of course I brought my warmest coat- a North Face and luckily so because it started raining at the end of the first quarter.

manning 10. pre game fun

Manning 10. pre game fun

When we attend games solo we hardly tailgate, because it’s usually more enjoyable with a large crowd. After the game, we were pretty hungry and wanted to catch some food quick before heading back home. The Giants play at MetLife stadium in New Jersey and after the game my husband and I went to Pizza Time which was less than 15 minutes away. It was time for the sunset prayer and they provided us a room for prayer which was so convenient. My husband and I each had a burger, and we split an order of hot wings and fries. Fast prompt service paired with tasty food and we were out of there within 30 minutes (including prayer) which was great because we wanted to beat Sunday night traffic back to the city.

For the love of DC

I came to DC with some friends to attend the ISNA convention. ISNA stands for Islamic Society North America and the ISNA convention is a convention held annually which brings speakers from all across America to enlighten us with some great lectures and workshops. There is also a bazaar which has clothes, paintings, furniture, jewelry etc from all over. It’s great to hang out with friends from near and far because these conventions bring tons of people together from all over.

I finally got to meet some people I have been networking with. One of them is Farrah of go to Greater Lengths . She’s awesome and I love her blog! You can read all about it here. She did a great section on ISNA as well entitled Modest Marvel and highlighted girls who she thought were dressed fashionably and modest and it is definitely worth checking! I spent a good amount of time at the bazaar because of the great hijab shopping. I bought hijabs from KottonLove and Zeena. I also bought hijabs from Zeena when I went to Fashion Fighting Famine in California. I love their unique prints! I bought a headscarf with chains on it. I am loving chains as a print and wearing chunky chains as well. It’s definitely a trend this season.

And I was surprised it was actually open because it was labor day (in NYC everything is closed). It’s so great to see different cities and how they each function uniquely. We also did touristy stuff and went to the National monument, Reflection Pool and Lincoln’s Memorial.

For the love of Washington D.C. – Food Edition

I travelled to DC for Labor day weekend with friends and family. The post was getting so long that I had to split it up. Here is the food edition of my DC trip. It’s a detailed description of the restaurants I went to. (some of these restaurants are actually not in DC but 10-25 mins away)

Busboys and Poets: very trendy laidback “community gathering place”. The chicken is halal and the meat is kosher. There are tons of vegetarian options, dessert, drinks and coffee. A major added plus is it’s completely inexpensive. I had the chicken Panini and some of my friends had the steak and asparagus salad which was a mere $13. It had 3 pieces of steak, salad with asparagus, dressing and gorgonzola cheese. It was so fresh. The dessert was great as well. I had iced mocha (twice) and shared desserts with friends. I loved their cheesecake. Link here. I cant emphasize how much I loved this place, probably one of the reasons I came here 3 times during my stay!

RJ cafe: this restaurant is nothing fancy but the food is outstanding. It’s a mom and pop type of restaurant with minimal décor. It could be described as All American and soul food. Their signature dishes include melt in your mouth ribs, BBQ wings, and chicken fried steak. For appetizers, we had the wings which are exceptionally large and are dripping in this BBQ sauce that is perfection. The crunch under the sauce was still there.  Whenever I see halal steak available, it’s hard for me to resist and so that is what I ordered. Unfortunately it was too dry for my liking. The chef saw me and asked how everything was and I said the ribs were exceptional (I had some from my friend) but I mentioned that in my meal, the steak was a little dry. He insisted on bringing another one. We came with such a large party that there was so much food I was actually almost full due to the appetizers. I thought that would serve as a mutual agreement to not bring out any more dishes. Within minutes there was a full plate with ribs (and sides) in front of me. Exceptional service. The ribs were melt in your mouth delish and the meat just pulled off the ribs with such ease. (Restaurant is actually in Maryland about 25 mins from DC). Link here.

Burger 7: If you know anything about me, my all time favorite food is a burger. We have some good options in NYC but nothing that I am fully 100% head over heels in love with. Well, I just had one of my best burgers EVER in DC. Yes in DC. If you ever had Elevation Burger, I would say Burger 7 would be similar to it but substantially better. I felt like the meat was juicier and the B7 sauce added an extra kick of flavor with just the right amount of spice but not overpowering. The meat is 100% organic (free range grass fed) and it definitely adds to the taste. The burger is not too large. I ate one within minutes and ordered another one. You  can add toppings to your liking, which is probably another reason why I love it so (Restaurant is actually in Arlington but that’s only 10-15 minutes from DC). Link here.

(I think I am still looking for a burger spot that is preferably not a chain because I feel like that would be more authentic. Do you know of any? What’s your favorite halal burger spot?)

Ravi Kabob: I needed to get my traditional Pakistani/Indian meal fix on the last day of the trip so we picked up Ravi Kabob before heading back to NYC. They don’t carry biryani on Mondays so we had to order plain white rice and bread (naan). The bread was great even after we got back to the hotel room. They did have the chicken karahi which is a dry chicken in curry with tons of spice. It was bursting with all exotic flavors. It was so tasty that I couldn’t stop eating it. The entire order was devoured in a few minutes (restaurant is actually in Arlington but that’s only about 10-15 mins from DC). Link here.

So that was a summary of what I ate in DC. With food options this unique and delicious, I am definitely coming back to DC very soon!

Next post will be on my outfits and pics with friends and some fabulous ladies.

For the love of an Iftar Party

husband and I

husband and I

Iftar is the meal eaten at sunset by Muslims. At the end of your long day of fasting, it’s such a blessing to break your fast with loved ones. Iftar parties are the festive and fun part of Ramadan. When people break their fast by food you provide, the host or sponsor gets loads of blessings. This is a major incentive to hold an iftar and it is encouraged to do so. Iftar parties are great because religion is the main focus of the get together.

2 weeks ago, I held a small iftar party at my in laws house for about 15 girls (not including the 9 kiddies!). It was a great girls only party and we were all able to enjoy the pool for a few hours before breaking our fast. The weather didn’t comply and even through the rain everyone still enjoyed themselves. My mother in law cooked up tons of eats and many of my friends brought food and specialty drinks as well. It was great to see my closest friends. Also, my husband was out of town. He was actually in Makkah because he went to perform Umrah and it was a lonely 8 days without him so it was great to meet up with my girls.

One of my cousins held an iftar this weekend. I was speaking to his wife who is having her first Ramadan in America this year. She married my cousin in Pakistan in December (you can read about my Pakistan trip here). She mentioned that she enjoyed Ramadan more in America than in Pakistan. That struck me as so odd. Pakistan is predominately a Muslim country so how could it possibly be more enjoyable in America? She went on to say that Ramadan is made a bigger deal in America because you get to see so many different groups of friends in different atmospheres. Iftars are held at local colleges, community centers, masjids, house parties and parties at restaurants as well. Also you go to different masjids for tarawih. In Pakistan, it’s like daily life there but in America, it brings people together and you feel a sense of community. That I would definitely have to agree with.

This past weekend one of my friends had an iftar party at her house as well. The food was a full American menu, with BBQ chicken, asparagus, mashed potatoes and gravy, chicken pasta, bread, garlic knots and stuffed mushrooms. The party was held outdoors and the decor was phenomenal. I loved the lights and the Ramadan Mubarak signs. It is great to encourage the festive Ramadan feel especially to the young generation who need to love their holidays. It was perfect outdoor weather for an outdoor iftar. Maghrib was prayed in congregation in the backyard as well.

My friend who hosted the iftar also had a small bday party for their daughter who was turning 2 the following day. She shares a birthday with my son. They were both born on the same day in the same hospital. Fun times! A delicious birthday cake was ordered and they bought a cake for my sons’ birthday as well. I loved all the decorations indoors for the cake and the goody bags that were labeled Ramadan Mubarak. Aaisha Shaikh of BakingPartTime also made 2 tarts for the party which were devoured within minutes! (check out her blog for more tasty treats!)

For the love of The Halal Food Tour

halal food tour

This past sunday was the Halal Food Tour presented by Sameer of Sameer’s Eats and his team including Saad Malik and Faraz Khan. If you don’t know who Sameer is, he is a halal foodie. He checks outs halal food spots around the country. The Halal Food tour was held at the Teaneck armory in New Jersey. This was the first ever tour with the second stop being in New Jersey. The first stop was in Irvine, California a few months prior. (Last year they had a halal food festival in New Jersey).

If you want to act hard, pose in front of a tank with shades on

There were many food vendors all around the field including Chal Chilli, Chinese Mirch, Kabab Paradise, Kasra Restaurant, Especially For-U-Cakes, Zaika BBQ &Grill, Pizza Time, Lal Qila to name a few. There was a kids large inflatable bouncy house and a few clothing stalls as well. The stage was set up in the front.

For my late lunch I had burgers from Kabab Paradise because burgers are my all time favorite food.

The burger was surprisingly delicious. Often, outdoor food tends to taste generic and not as flavorful. But the burger was grilled to perfection and the meat patty was seasoned and of a generous portion. The toppings were the perfect finishing touch to the burger and I was quite content.

There was a break for Asr prayer. Soon after was the Iron chef competition which was one of the main events of the program. Earlier in the day, Yvonne Maffei of Myhalalkitchen.com gave a chicken parmesan demonstration but I missed that. For the Iron chef competition there was 4 spots/teams and one spot opened up last minute and a last minute contestant joined with her sister. The first dish was chicken strips sponsored by crescent foods and there was 20 mins allotted to finish. The secret ingredient was apricots and it had to be incorporated into the meal. The 2nd half was dessert and each team had 10 minutes to prepare the dish. They were given cake and biscuits as a base.

The judges were the mayor of Teaneck- Mohammad Hameeduddin, Sameer Sarmast and Ibtihaj Muhammad who is a member of the United States fencing team. I was heartbroken beyond belief. I was angry for days, weeks, months and then eventually I got over it. I was so young, only in the 5th grade or so. It makes me extremely happy to see Ibtihaj able to be on the fencing team and able to do so while still being dressed modestly and wearing the head covering. Silk tunic top: Hale Bob purchased at ruelala.com. I wore a simple tunic top to stay cool in the warm weather and it was great for an outdoor event. I especially like this top because of its longer length and loose fit. It also has crystals and bead work along the neckline for an extra flair to a plain tunic.

Mustard pants: Esprit, which I wear all the time. These are the perfect color for spring, summer and fall. They are so soft and comfortable and have a slim leg without being tight. I also wore them in a prior post, you can read about it here.

Wide T strap sandals: Boutique 9. These shoes have studs and crystals on the wide T Strap. I also wore them in a prior post, you can read about it here.

For the love of the Trouser Pant

Martha's and I

Martha’s and I

One of my friends came back home for a short trip because her younger sister was getting married. After all the wedding festivities settled down, I caught up with her and a few friends. It was very last minute and we got some Chinese food followed by dessert at Martha’s Country Bakery. Fatimas Halal Kitchen is in Astoria and they have good Chinese food and it’s not expensive at all. It’s a laid back restaurant and we all enjoyed ourselves. I ordered my usual which is General Tsaos chicken and beef fried rice. I attached a picture of dinner.

After dinner we went to Martha’s Country Bakery which was very close by. They close at 11 pm and we got their right before closing. I ordered tres leches and it was good but maybe a tad bit too sweet. One of their more popular dessert is the very berry napoleon but im not a huge fan. It’s good but I just don’t find it amazing. But everyone I know is obsessed with it. Their frozen coffee drinks are my favorite but it was too late to order one because drinking coffee very late keeps me up.  Service was prompt and everyone was accommodating.

Hmm, what should I order?

I wore trouser pants in a bright coral/orange hue. I love these pants because they have a great fit and are very long. Trouser pants tend to be a little looser and are generally worn more dressy because of the wide leg opening. They are great pants to be worn to work and can be worn casually paired with flats and a tee shirt. I love the fit of this pant and I have it in a green shade as well. The length of these trouser pants required me to wear them with heels and I wore them with patent leather wedge sandals. I paired the pants with a silk top and I added a gold belt with Swarovski crystal detailing. I wore a silk rectangle hijab (head scarf) which matched the texture of the shirt and the color of the pants. Not pictured well, but my outfit was complemented with a purple Chanel handbag that has a brushed gold chain.

For the love of Fathers

my father, husband and father in law

my father, husband and father in law

Everyday is Fathers day. Yes. Definitely true. But to show extra appreciation, here is love for our fathers who also happen to be husbands, brothers, grandparents, uncles etc. This past Sunday was Fathers day.

my pops and I

my pops and I

While growing up, I know my father worked so much and now that I have my own family and I see my husband working so much I see how much dedication and love it takes for someone to work so many hours and at times be away from family life. My father is a hard worker and he enabled me to fulfill all my aspirations by always being supportive in all aspects. My dad is the typical desi parent where feelings are not always shared. Even so, there was small things that my dad would do that would always show me how much he cared. The one instance that comes to my mind is back in high school when my parents were looking to buy a house and I told my dad I didn’t want to relocate. He actually listened to me and didn’t move. Looking back on it would I do that for my kids? My parents lived in an apartment for their whole lives until the last 8 years when they were able to fully purchase a house interest free. If I was in that same position, and had never lived in a house before, would  I delay that dream of being a homeowner for the sake of your child?

The ironic thing is that one of my managers at one of my stores was telling me he was in the same position. He found a house and his daughter who was 10 didn’t want to move. My advice to my manager was, don’t listen to your daughter. They are so young, they will adjust perfectly. I realize I most likely would have adjusted perfectly fine if we relocated. But at the time I didn’t know that and I was beyond grateful that we didn’t end up moving. Just one instance of the love of a father. (the moving decision only affected me because my elder siblings would continue at their own HS because location did not change their admittance in their specific high schools)

my father in law and I

my father in law and I

My father in law is one of the most gentlest souls I know. There are many aspects of his life that I wish to mimic in my own like opening up a free clinic. He is extremely giving and genuine and always keeps Islam at the forefront. Mashallah. And last but not least, my wonderful husband. He is the best dad to my kids. My kids have a special bond and love for their dad. I’m so proud to say that my husband is very hands on with the kids and helps out as much as he possibly can. He works well over the normal 40 hours a week and my kids definitely miss him a lot. Coming home from work, as he parks the car in front of the house, the audible beep to lock the car sends my kids running to the window. When the keys jingle at the front door they start squealing with excitement: “Baba’s home, Baba’s home!” It melts my heart.

I wore harem style printed pants. So casual and chic. I wore them with flats because I was running around so much but they would look great with ankle wrap sandals, wedges and espadrilles as well. Paired with a simple black long sleeved tee shirt.

For the love of Vegas

me in Vegas

me in Vegas

For the love of Vegas. May I assume your initial reaction? A little hesitant. Maybe some confusion and maybe some agreement. Some of you are probably thinking what is a girl like me doing in a place like Vegas where alcohol, gambling and clubbing/partying is rampant especially since I don’t partake in any of those activities. And this can be one of the reasons why I haven’t been to Vegas before. But there is so much more to Vegas than what I listed above. There are tons of shows, kid friendly activities, shopping galore and amazing dining options! Whats not to love?!

me with a turban style hijab

Me with a turban style hijab. My face is very oily as per usual, my apologies. This was from dinner at AquaKnox

This past Memorial Day weekend my husband and I went to Las Vegas with my kids and my brother in law. We met up with a few friends who were staying for the weekend with their families as well. Saturday night was the first time I wore my hijab turban style inspired by the gorgeous Nura of @nuralailalov. I loved it. This turban style is so fun and different. Saturday night dinner was at AquaKnox which is in the Venetian where we were staying for our trip. I had the crab stuffed maine lobster. And that was easily the best lobster I’ve ever had. The dining options in Vegas are out of this world. So many fine dining options. NYC definitely still has the best restaurants, but Las Vegas has a lot of them as well like: Mesa Grill, Serendipity3, Sushi Samba, Tao, Nobu, Grand Lux just to name a few. After dinner, we went to catch a cirque du soleil show- Mystere.

(This is a very long post. I attached outfit of the day details to each day.)

On Sunday morning we got breakfast buffet at Caesars Palace and it was better than our previous mornings breakfast buffet from Wynn. Caesars Palace had slightly more halal food options. It seemed never ending. After that we went to Mandalay Bay because they had an aquarium. The kids enjoyed it so much. It’s not large but it has tons of sharks and a stingray petting section. The aquarium was set up beautifully with all the details and statues. It reminded me of the aquariums at Atlantis but much smaller scale. Below are pictures from the aquarium and my simple daytime no makeup look.

Sunday night was our second show and we watched Le Reve. It was amazing. Probably one of the best shows I’ve watched. It had less stunts but it had a story line and it was fully entertaining. I love these shows by cirque du soleil because I feel like they are a circus and broadway combined. In the evening I wore the same outfit, but I just put on makeup and I wore matching wrist cuff bracelets.

Sunday Outfit of the day (OOTD) details:

Silk shirt: Hale Bob purchased at ruelala.com for $40. I love this shirt. I love the rust orange color, the loose fit and the long length of the shirt. I wore it high low style by tucking it in, in the front. I often tuck shirts in if the pants have pleats in the front. It emphasizes the shape of the pant and allows you to see the front pleats. This top also comes with a neck tie and goldtone hardware closure.

Paisley printed pleated pants: Loft

Shoes: Boutique 9 purchased at Bloomingdale’s

Handbag: Rebecca Minkoff purchased at Bloomingdale’s

Matching wrist cuff bracelets: Arden B

Monday morning was checkout and that’s when we drove to the Grand Canyon. It was a long drive, about 4 hours each way but it was worth it. The Grand Canyon is breathtaking. I wish our trip wasn’t so short so we could have spent a longer time at the Grand Canyon but we had to leave to catch our midnight flight back to NYC. Attached are OOTD pics from the Grand Canyon.

Welcomed to the Grand Canyon

Long cotton printed top: Derek Lam for Kohls

Pants: Gap- True straight

Belt: Cole Haan

Shoes: Boutique 9 purchased at Bloomingdale’s

Handbag: Kate Spade purchased at Katespade.com during their surprise sale for an outstanding price. If you are not signed up for Kate Spade’s emailing list you MUST do it ASAP because they notify you of their surprise sale which has the items for drastically reduced prices. I’m in love with this green color- and it’s the It color of the season.
