For the love of DC

I came to DC with some friends to attend the ISNA convention. ISNA stands for Islamic Society North America and the ISNA convention is a convention held annually which brings speakers from all across America to enlighten us with some great lectures and workshops. There is also a bazaar which has clothes, paintings, furniture, jewelry etc from all over. It’s great to hang out with friends from near and far because these conventions bring tons of people together from all over.

I finally met Farrah of Greater Lenghts!

I finally got to meet some people I have been networking with. One of them is Farrah of go to Greater Lengths . She’s awesome and I love her blog! You can read all about it here. She did a great section on ISNA as well entitled Modest Marvel and highlighted girls who she thought were dressed fashionably and modest and it is definitely worth checking! I spent a good amount of time at the bazaar because of the great hijab shopping. I bought hijabs from KottonLove and Zeena. I also bought hijabs from Zeena when I went to Fashion Fighting Famine in California. I love their unique prints! I bought a headscarf with chains on it. I am loving chains as a print and wearing chunky chains as well. It’s definitely a trend this season.

Monday we did tons of sightseeing with the kiddies. We went to the Smithsonian Institute- National Air and Space museum and there was no admission fee! And I was surprised it was actually open because it was labor day (in NYC everything is closed). It’s so great to see different cities and how they each function uniquely. We also did touristy stuff and went to the National monument, Reflection Pool and Lincoln’s Memorial.

For the love of the Big Apple Circus

circus

circus

About a month ago, I attended the Big Apple Circus when it was in town. I went with my husband and both our sons. It was held at Cunningham park in Queens. Very many years ago when I was in Junior High School, I remember going to the circus on a Friday night with some of my girlfriends and it was nostalgic to be back at the same place well over a decade later.

The acts were unique to the Big Apple and they incorporated parts of NYC life into the circus acts. For example the dog show was set to take place in central park because back in the day that was the weekend activity- walking dogs in the park and the tightrope walk act was shown to be walking over the Verrazano bridge.

circus

circus

The Big Apple Circus is such a lovely family tradition. It’s smaller scale than a larger circus like the Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey circus which is usually held at a much larger venue. I attended this circus in my childhood and I remember that it was my first time ever going to Madison Square Garden which was very exciting. The Big Apple Circus gives off a neighborhood vibe by being held at the park. The circus is complete with typical circus food which was available for purchase consisting of popcorn, soda, hot dogs, cotton candy etc. adding to the laidback feel. The kids loved it and it was quite enjoyable by all. (There are no pics of the show itself because photography was not allowed inside.)

For the love of The Halal Food Tour

halal food tour

halal food tour

This past sunday was the Halal Food Tour presented by Sameer of Sameer’s Eats and his team including Saad Malik and Faraz Khan. If you don’t know who Sameer is, he is a halal foodie. He checks outs halal food spots around the country. The Halal Food tour was held at the Teaneck armory in New Jersey. This was the first ever tour with the second stop being in New Jersey. The first stop was in Irvine, California a few months prior. (Last year they had a halal food festival in New Jersey).

posing with a tank- it was held at the teaneck armory

If you want to act hard, pose in front of a tank with shades on

There were many food vendors all around the field including Chal Chilli, Chinese Mirch, Kabab Paradise, Kasra Restaurant, Especially For-U-Cakes, Zaika BBQ &Grill, Pizza Time, Lal Qila to name a few. There was a kids large inflatable bouncy house and a few clothing stalls as well. The stage was set up in the front.

Chef Fahim Saleh- burger flipping action at Kabab Paradise

For my late lunch I had burgers from Kabab Paradise because burgers are my all time favorite food.

burgers and wings- essentials

The burger was surprisingly delicious. Often, outdoor food tends to taste generic and not as flavorful. But the burger was grilled to perfection and the meat patty was seasoned and of a generous portion. The toppings were the perfect finishing touch to the burger and I was quite content.

There was a break for Asr prayer. Soon after was the Iron chef competition which was one of the main events of the program. Earlier in the day, Yvonne Maffei of Myhalalkitchen.com gave a chicken parmesan demonstration but I missed that. For the Iron chef competition there was 4 spots/teams and one spot opened up last minute and a last minute contestant joined with her sister. The first dish was chicken strips sponsored by crescent foods and there was 20 mins allotted to finish. The secret ingredient was apricots and it had to be incorporated into the meal. The 2nd half was dessert and each team had 10 minutes to prepare the dish. They were given cake and biscuits as a base.

The judges were the mayor of Teaneck- Mohammad Hameeduddin, Sameer Sarmast and Ibtihaj Muhammad who is a member of the United States fencing team. She is the first muslim women to represent the United States in international competition. The judges are on stage overlooking the contestants wearing the white chef hats and Aman Ali was moderating the competition. Faraz Khan was very busy with capturing all of the days events on camera and film.

I thought I was going to the Olympics. Ha. When I started attending meets and competitions my parents abruptly said I couldn’t go anymore because I had to wear leotards to the meets and competitions. I was heartbroken beyond belief. I was angry for days, weeks, months and then eventually I got over it. I was so young, only in the 5th grade or so. It makes me extremely happy to see Ibtihaj able to be on the fencing team and able to do so while still being dressed modestly and wearing the head covering. Also, I think I was in awe at how she exudes such grace and class Mashallah. What a stunner and an amazing role model and a true inspiration. You can check out her facebook page here.

Silk tunic top: Hale Bob purchased at ruelala.com. I wore a simple tunic top to stay cool in the warm weather and it was great for an outdoor event. I especially like this top because of its longer length and loose fit. It also has crystals and bead work along the neckline for an extra flair to a plain tunic.

Mustard pants: Esprit, which I wear all the time. These are the perfect color for spring, summer and fall. They are so soft and comfortable and have a slim leg without being tight. I also wore them in a prior post, you can read about it here.

For the love of the July 4th Weekend

Maliha and Saqib from their Gaye Holud

Maliha and Saqib from their Gaye Holud

July 4th weekend is when America celebrates Independence Day and for most it is filled with family, friends, BBQ, pool parties, the beach and fireworks. This hardly ever holds true for me because there is always something a lot more important going on- there is always weddings July 4th weekend. Fittingly so, my husband and I got married the same weekend many (many) years ago. Ha. This year one of my friends got married and her wedding events dominated the weekend.

bride and I- 2 days before the wedding

bride and I- 2 days before the wedding

On July 4th, we had a pre wedding party to attend- the Gaye Holud (pronounced guy). This is a Bangladeshi term for a pre wedding party. A Gaye Holud is a fun festive non formal party before the wedding to get everyone in the mood. It’s filled with dancing, henna, music, food, décor and gifts. During a Gaye Holud, usually wedding clothes, jewelry and gifts are presented beautifully and exchanged. Holud itself is actually turmeric powder- that is a yellow spice. It is said to make the skin glow and at some Gaye Holuds, all the guests put the holud on the brides skin to give her a glow. The bride wore a sari in typical holud/mehndhi colors. Holud/mehndhi colors are usually yellow, green, orange and red. The bride also was adorned with artificial decorative floral jewelry to add to the festive feel. Many brides wear real flowers as well.

sister of the bride and I

sister of the bride and I

I wore a typical Pakistani mehndhi outfit consisting of bright colors. I wore a silk outfit with wide leg pants. The pink dupatta I used to cover my hair. The chiffon crinkle material was perfect to give a little extra volume. I bought it from Pakistan when I went on my first ever trip this past December. Yes you read correct, my first ever trip. I made a post on it, be sure to read about it here.

ladies only!

ladies only! look at all the vibrant colors!

The mehdnhi was separated the second half of the evening and the guys were asked to leave. This enabled all the girls to join in the dancing festivities by not having to cover up and being able to dance and perform the organized dances. I actually had to leave early and could not stay for the remainder of the Holud because I had work for 13 hours the next day.

bridal poses

bridal poses

Saturday was the wedding. The bride wore a beautiful forest green gown perfectly coordinated with cream. She didn’t wear typical red because she wore that color on her nikkah (religious wedding ceremony) about 8 months prior. The bride wore a Paksitani style outfit. The gown had a train and was heavily adorned with crystals in large motifs all throughout. Her dress sparkled from every direction and could be easily seen from every single corner of the hall. So stunning, Mashallah!

my hubby and I with the newlyweds

my hubby and I with the newlyweds

I wore a gown which I also got from my Pakistan trip. The gown I wore was one of my favorites. I loved it because the gown had all these extra details that made it so unique. It has horizontal pleats on the chest, ruching on the wrists, vertical pleats on the bottom hem, a jeweled neckline and large crystals embellishments in many different colors. The dark colors- black and gray which made it perfect for a nighttime wedding. The front was all embroidered with threadwork and crystals and faux pearls. There was so much work on the outfit, I didn’t wear any jewelry except one Swarovski cocktail ring.

in love with fariquas sari

This gown is actually just like an abaya/jilbab but heavily adorned. I enjoyed wearing it so much and I will definitely wear it to some of my friends’ weddings that are coming up! I actually had to wear my gown with flats but it worked out perfectly because my feet didn’t hurt and I was able to hold my kids with no difficulties (wearing heels and holding kids takes serious balancing skills- a skill that I have not mastered as of yet)

For the love of the Trouser Pant

Martha's and I

Martha’s and I

One of my friends came back home for a short trip because her younger sister was getting married. After all the wedding festivities settled down, I caught up with her and a few friends. It was very last minute and we got some Chinese food followed by dessert at Martha’s Country Bakery. Fatimas Halal Kitchen is in Astoria and they have good Chinese food and it’s not expensive at all. It’s a laid back restaurant and we all enjoyed ourselves. I ordered my usual which is General Tsaos chicken and beef fried rice. I attached a picture of dinner.

After dinner we went to Martha’s Country Bakery which was very close by. They close at 11 pm and we got their right before closing. I ordered tres leches and it was good but maybe a tad bit too sweet. One of their more popular dessert is the very berry napoleon but im not a huge fan. It’s good but I just don’t find it amazing. But everyone I know is obsessed with it. Their frozen coffee drinks are my favorite but it was too late to order one because drinking coffee very late keeps me up.  Service was prompt and everyone was accommodating.

Hmm, what should I order?

I wore trouser pants in a bright coral/orange hue. I love these pants because they have a great fit and are very long. Trouser pants tend to be a little looser and are generally worn more dressy because of the wide leg opening. They are great pants to be worn to work and can be worn casually paired with flats and a tee shirt. I love the fit of this pant and I have it in a green shade as well. The length of these trouser pants required me to wear them with heels and I wore them with patent leather wedge sandals. I paired the pants with a silk top and I added a gold belt with Swarovski crystal detailing. I wore a silk rectangle hijab (head scarf) which matched the texture of the shirt and the color of the pants. Not pictured well, but my outfit was complemented with a purple Chanel handbag that has a brushed gold chain.

For the love of Fathers

my father, husband and father in law

my father, husband and father in law

Everyday is Fathers day. Yes. Definitely true. But to show extra appreciation, here is love for our fathers who also happen to be husbands, brothers, grandparents, uncles etc. This past Sunday was Fathers day.

my pops and I

my pops and I

While growing up, I know my father worked so much and now that I have my own family and I see my husband working so much I see how much dedication and love it takes for someone to work so many hours and at times be away from family life. My father is a hard worker and he enabled me to fulfill all my aspirations by always being supportive in all aspects. My dad is the typical desi parent where feelings are not always shared. Even so, there was small things that my dad would do that would always show me how much he cared. The one instance that comes to my mind is back in high school when my parents were looking to buy a house and I told my dad I didn’t want to relocate. He actually listened to me and didn’t move. Looking back on it would I do that for my kids? My parents lived in an apartment for their whole lives until the last 8 years when they were able to fully purchase a house interest free. If I was in that same position, and had never lived in a house before, would  I delay that dream of being a homeowner for the sake of your child?

The ironic thing is that one of my managers at one of my stores was telling me he was in the same position. He found a house and his daughter who was 10 didn’t want to move. My advice to my manager was, don’t listen to your daughter. They are so young, they will adjust perfectly. I realize I most likely would have adjusted perfectly fine if we relocated. But at the time I didn’t know that and I was beyond grateful that we didn’t end up moving. Just one instance of the love of a father. (the moving decision only affected me because my elder siblings would continue at their own HS because location did not change their admittance in their specific high schools)

my father in law and I

my father in law and I

My father in law is one of the most gentlest souls I know. There are many aspects of his life that I wish to mimic in my own like opening up a free clinic. He is extremely giving and genuine and always keeps Islam at the forefront. Mashallah. And last but not least, my wonderful husband. He is the best dad to my kids. My kids have a special bond and love for their dad. I’m so proud to say that my husband is very hands on with the kids and helps out as much as he possibly can. He works well over the normal 40 hours a week and my kids definitely miss him a lot. Coming home from work, as he parks the car in front of the house, the audible beep to lock the car sends my kids running to the window. When the keys jingle at the front door they start squealing with excitement: “Baba’s home, Baba’s home!” It melts my heart.

For the love of Spanish Soccer

raf and I

Raf and i

This past Tuesday my husband and I attended the soccer game at Yankee stadium with the world cup champions. It was a friendly international game- Spain vs. Ireland. I have never been to Yankee stadium, so this was a fun first. Also, I have no desire to watch baseball so the fact that I was able to attend a game at Yankee stadium and not watch baseball was a major plus. (I have watched one soccer game previously. That was a few summers ago at Red Bull arena in NJ between the Red Bulls and DC United. We watched Thierry Henry play and he scored one goal. It was a high scoring exciting game.)

at halftime. note how the bases are covered with grass to get the soccer field!

Spain was clearly the favorites and were predicted to win. No one scored in the first half. The second half was definitely more enjoyable. Spain scored 2 goals- the first one being in the 69th minute. There are no timeouts in a soccer match, making it one of the quickest games. Football, baseball, basketball etc. are each almost 3 hours including breaks and timeouts. Soccer is 45 minutes uninterrupted followed by a small halftime and then 45 more minutes. The game sometimes goes an extra few minutes which takes into account the few delays during the game. Spain scored a second goal and won the match 2-0.

The crowd consisted of mainly New Yorkers, some out of towners and a decent amount tourists. There was so many different languages being spoken. It was a fun, lively, friendly, competitive environment. An enjoyable evening was had in The Bronx. The Yankee stadium would be the next best thing in the Bronx to the Bronx zoo! I blogged about it. For the love of Houndstooth

houndstooth

houndstooth

If you are unaware, houndstooth is described as a checked pattern with broken/notched corners. Classic houndstooth is black and white but there are also different variations like brown paired with cream and blue paired with white. Houndstooth can be considered a standard print alongside with: leopard, zebra, chevron, stripes etc. I actually didn’t own anything with a houndstooth print until Embellished Wraps sent me this beautiful hijab/wrap/headscarf.

When I opened the package from Embellished Wraps, I slightly gasped because the colors, textures and material are top of the line. It’s so lush and lux. The simple blush pink color paired with the houndstooth and rosettes at the end is stunningly coordinated. It’s quite gorgeous and this hijab is such an easy way to add extra flair to an otherwise ordinary outfit. I was so excited to put together this post but had to delay it because of my demanding work schedule due to the fact that I just went away on a mini vacation last week. For the love of Vegas

me in Vegas

me in Vegas

For the love of Vegas. May I assume your initial reaction? A little hesitant. Maybe some confusion and maybe some agreement. Some of you are probably thinking what is a girl like me doing in a place like Vegas where alcohol, gambling and clubbing/partying is rampant especially since I don’t partake in any of those activities. And this can be one of the reasons why I haven’t been to Vegas before. But there is so much more to Vegas than what I listed above. There are tons of shows, kid friendly activities, shopping galore and amazing dining options! Whats not to love?!

me with a turban style hijab

Me with a turban style hijab. My face is very oily as per usual, my apologies. This was from dinner at AquaKnox

This past Memorial Day weekend my husband and I went to Las Vegas with my kids and my brother in law. We met up with a few friends who were staying for the weekend with their families as well. Saturday night was the first time I wore my hijab turban style inspired by the gorgeous Nura of @nuralailalov. I loved it. This turban style is so fun and different. Saturday night dinner was at AquaKnox which is in the Venetian where we were staying for our trip. I had the crab stuffed maine lobster. And that was easily the best lobster I’ve ever had. The dining options in Vegas are out of this world. So many fine dining options. NYC definitely still has the best restaurants, but Las Vegas has a lot of them as well like: Mesa Grill, Serendipity3, Sushi Samba, Tao, Nobu, Grand Lux just to name a few. After dinner, we went to catch a cirque du soleil show- Mystere.

(This is a very long post. I attached outfit of the day details to each day.)

On Sunday morning we got breakfast buffet at Caesars Palace and it was better than our previous mornings breakfast buffet from Wynn. Caesars Palace had slightly more halal food options. It seemed never ending. After that we went to Mandalay Bay because they had an aquarium. The kids enjoyed it so much. It’s not large but it has tons of sharks and a stingray petting section. The aquarium was set up beautifully with all the details and statues. It reminded me of the aquariums at Atlantis but much smaller scale. Below are pictures from the aquarium and my simple daytime no makeup look.

Sunday night was our second show and we watched Le Reve. It was amazing. Probably one of the best shows I’ve watched. It had less stunts but it had a story line and it was fully entertaining. I love these shows by cirque du soleil because I feel like they are a circus and broadway combined. In the evening I wore the same outfit, but I just put on makeup and I wore matching wrist cuff bracelets.

For the love of the Denim Jacket

I have not worn a denim jacket for years; the last time I wore one was probably junior high school, maybe even elementary school. I have been looking for the perfect denim jacket but I never found one I fully liked. There’s always too many contributing factors involved like fit, length and color and I could never find the perfect combination of all three. When I was at the mall a few weeks ago, the spiked detailing on this denim jacket caught my eye. Reluctantly, I tried it on and when I did, I could not put it down. I liked this jacket because it’s cropped and fitted. It also has a reverse high low style which looks great when worn open as well as closed. I like how it has a sleek shape without bulky buttons. The zipper closure and zipper on the sleeves add to the sleek fit. This light color denim is perfect for the spring and summer because it contrasts well with bright and bold colors. This denim jacket is a much more updated look than the classic denim jacket. Full outfit details in the middle of the post.

This denim jacket has spiked detailing on the shoulders and across the back which are shown in the pics above. Yes, I’m still obsessing over this spike trend! Read my post on spike loving here. I feel like denim jackets can get tricky because it should be properly paired with denim jeans of the same shade. A fashion no no is pairing it with dark denim jeans or vice versa. It looks too busy, messy and unkempt. This light color denim can go great with white pants/jeans and linen. You can also pair it with certain black pants as well. If you do not have jeans of the same shade, you can always wear it with dresses and skirts. Denim jackets look great with printed dresses, and printed skirts as well. The contrast of different prints like floral, graphic, stripes etc pair exceptionally well with denim. I will include a future OOTD with this jacket and a dress.
