For the love of Turning 30

Normally my birthday is not a big deal at all. It comes and it goes. But this year, as I am turning 30, I have been doing a lot of reflecting on my life- what I have done and what I still hope to achieve. Some people may shy away from this milestone birthday, but I for one, am embracing 30 because I truly feel blessed and grateful and upon reflection I am deeply humbled.

For a small family dinner, we went for dinner at Le Bernardin in the city. My older sister, Maryam, and I have birthdays one day apart (she is 364 days older than me) so this was a collaboration birthday dinner for the both of us. It was a prix fixe menu which included appetizers and then the 4 course meal, the last course being dessert. The food was spectacular. I included pics from almost all of the entrees. The service was prompt and the waiters were unbelievably polite and responsive. My dinner entree was not as delicious as the previous entrees but I didn’t say anything. The waiter came up to me on his own and insisted on bringing me something else. They sent me a new dish which perfected the whole experience. The food was positively flavorful and filling. Dessert completed the whole meal and was out of this world. So much robust flavor and texture. A sweet ending to the meal accompanied with iced cappuccino.

For the love of Spikes

sans spikes edgy

My obsession with spikes started a few seasons ago when Burberry introduced their trench coats with spike detailing. I was in love. Spikes have become more mainstream now and it can be worn both edgy and high fashion as well. When implementing spikes, its important to keep only one item with spikes. But you can add as much spiked jewelry as you prefer. You don’t want to overdo the spike look because that can come off as tacky. Jeffrey Campbell has affordable edgy shoes with spikes. Aldo, Steve Madden and Zara all have incorporated spikes in their shoes as well. If you want high fashion, nothing beats Christian Louboutins Spikes shoes. They come in many varieties from metal to metallic to colored spikes. Valentino has gorgeous spiked bags and shoes from their rockstud collection.Zara has spike detailing in their clothes as well. I bought this top from Zara and it has such a perfect modest fit. It comes in 2 styles and of course I bought them both. It’s slightly longer in length and has a loose fit. The sleeves can also be worn rolled up and buttoned in place. It’s casual and edgy. Perfectly worn with heels or flats. Asos, H&M and Forever 21 all sell clothes with spike detailing. If you are following me on Instagram@sanahrashid you probably noticed my spiky nails that I was sporting last week. So edgy and so much fun! In the fashion of loving all things spikes, it only makes sense for me to have spiky nails as well! Below is how I incorporated spikes with a top and a pair of shoes and came up with 2 different looks- one more casual/edgy and one more dressy. I have worn the Jeffrey Campbell spiketini shoes in a previous post, you can view my outfit of the day here. Also, I have worn spiked jewelry in one of my previous posts as well, which you can see here.

For the love of Fur vests

For the love of the Fur vest

For the love of Fur vests

If you want to add a little bit of luxe and serious texture to your wardrobe, a fur vest is just the piece to do this. It is versatile because it can be worn both dressy and casual with just a hint of high fashion. Whenever I am wearing one, I feel super trendy and chic. Real fur vests can get pricey but luckily there are plenty of faux fur options that are completely affordable. (I’m not taking a stance on if you should go with real fur or faux fur). Most faux fur looks real from far away but to the touch you may be able to feel a difference. If you are looking to sport an extremely trendy look, it maybe be easier to find it in faux fur as opposed to real fur. The winter cold months are almost over but a fur vest can still be worn in springtime during the evening if you have one in a light color. A solid black fur vest can be worn as well in the evening for a more dressy occasion. Here is my fur vest worn three ways. For the love of Pakistan

From the top of the tower at Wazir Khan mosque in Lahore

From the top of the tower at Wazir Khan mosque in Lahore

At the end of December, I took my first ever trip to the country of my birth. Yes, this is an embarrassingly true fact of my life. I was born in Pakistan, and when I was a few months old, I came to America and have never been back till just this December for my cousin’s wedding. My trip was 2 weeks long and I thoroughly enjoyed my trip. Pakistan is so beautiful and it amazes me how the people there are able to do so much even though they have so little.  My one regret is not having more time to see the rest of the country. The wedding took up a lot of time but it was so much fun. All of the pre wedding parties led up to the hype and excitement of the wedding. The flowers, food, arrangements, decor, dance and festivities are not to be missed and I am so happy I was able to see a full-fledged Pakistani wedding in Pakistan. Here are some snapshots of my trip to Pakistan taken from my iPhone. My friends who know me are probably laughing at the title of this post because I don’t speak Urdu and I am so uncultured and so disconnected to Pakistan. This trip definitely brought me a sense of completion with my identity and a greater sense of belonging than before. Oh, and the shopping is out of this world, not comparable to anything else I’ve ever seen!

For the love of vibrant printed Scarves

Believe it or not, I used to be extremely monotonous in my choice of head scarves. I would wear the same style and it would range between black, dark brown and dark blue. More recently, I have been experimenting with beautiful prints and vibrant rich hues on my head! And its a feeling like no other! I thought I couldn’t pull it off and initially I couldn’t adjust to the fact that I was wearing such a bright color and a print but it fully completes and complements an outfit. If you are wearing a solid colored outfit or colors within the same color family, a printed scarf is the perfect finishing touch. Also, I noticed the days I wore printed scarves, people were actually more friendly to me which is an added plus! So, where can we purchase such scarves? CENTURY 21! This is my go to for vibrant printed scarves. Each scarf is about $15-$25 and its 100% silk. What a steal. Also, century 21 has high-end designer brands like versace, emilio pucci, valentino etc as well. A lot of other stores like gap, NY&Co, lord & taylor, strawberry etc. sell regular winter scarves and silk scarves which you can use as a head scarf. Having a hard time finding a solid dressy scarf? Here is the best tip you will read: go to a fabric store and buy 1 yard of cloth in stretch silk. It’s about $5 a yard. All you have to do is get the edges hemmed. Have a great friday everyone!
